The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Alpes-Maritimes region
The Côte d’Azur offers such a diverse range of exciting things to do and see. Whether you fancy sauntering down one of the promenades of the numerous resorts along the 120 kms of sparkling coastline, or taking in the perfumes of the lavender, rosemary and pines of the Mediterranean landscape, there’s bound to be something to please.
Travelling on up into the hills you can stop off and explore enchanting towns and villages, investigate their historical and cultural heritage or buy a memento from one of the many markets. Alternatively you can visit one of the numerous museums and art galleries, a testimony to the wealth of artists and writers – Picasso, Matisse, Renoir and DH Lawrence to name but a few - who all found inspiration from the light and lifestyle.
The numerous sophisticated resorts such as Monaco, Cannes, Nice, Antibes and Juan-les-Pins offer style and relaxation where you can enjoy all kinds of water sports and marine activities.
Tourrettes sur Loup area
Tourrettes sur Loup is one of the famous fortified villages in the region known as a “village perché” dating back at least to the Xlll century. It is now home to numerous artists and artisans such as potters, weavers and jewellers, whose numerous ateliers and workshops are housed along the cobbled winding streets of the old village behind the square.
The bank, boulangeries, green grocers and butchers as well as the “pharmacien” are all centred around the village square cheek by jowl with the picturesque Xlll century church and Town Hall – which are well worth a visit. Pétanque takes the square over after lunch and at weekends - visitors welcome.
The village takes its name from the river Loup, the French word for wolf (and packs of these used to roam the hills). The village celebrates the wolf with a festival in December/January each year and on the final Sunday wolves are brought down to the village from a reserve up in the outlying hills, much to the enjoyment of the village children.
Tourrettes is also famous for its violets which it supplies to the perfume industry in the neighbouring town of Grasse. The village celebrates the flower in early March at the Violet Festival when you can buy bunches of fresh violets, violet liqueur and violet flavoured ice cream. There are numerous activities carried on in the vicinity which include hiking and paragliding.
