La Bastide
About the home
This lovely c18th stone olive farm was purchased 10 years ago by its English owners. While great care has been taken to preserve its original character, new features including a heated Roman style plunge pool, and home cinema have been incorporated to create a unique paradise retreat. At an altitude of 600 meters, the property comprises almost 5 acres of unspoiled countryside ideal for hikers, ornithologists, and nature lovers. Although only a few minutes from Nice, privacy and tranquility are guaranteed as the property can only be accessed by forest tracks, one leading to Aspremont and Tourrette Levens, one to Falicon and a third to St Andre de la Roche (these unsurfaced roads are unsuitable for very low vehicles).
The extensive grounds feature over 60 ancient olive trees and are a haven for birds, butterflies and wildflowers. Eagles can often be seen circling the hills behind the property. Several excellent restaurants can be found in the nearby perched villages of Tourrette Levens and Aspremont and many of the Riviera's finest beaches, Monaco and Nice airport are just 30 minutes away by car. The amazing new Nice tramway with easily accessible free parking is less than fifteen minutes away.
Boat trips to the beautiful islands near Cannes, famous for their crystal clear water, are available for 2012 aboard our private Nowegian built 26' motor cruiser as an exciting option. This unique property in a truly stunning and unforgettable setting offers a rare opportunity to combine the excitement of the Riviera with the peace and tranquility of a secluded, traditional provençal retreat.

Further details indoors:
The Bastide is traditionally furnished and the accommodation is typical of a provençal farmhouse. The large bathroom is equipped with a power shower and traditional bath tub. Water is drawn from our own mountain source and is softened.
Full gas central heating is available in the winter months. There is also a superb home cinema fully equipped with surround sound located in a vaulted cave beneath the main house. Large groups have the option of renting 'La Cigale', our second property on the estate, at discounted rates.
Further details outdoors:
The Bastide is accessed by steep stone steps. The land is terraced to provide different levels and is therefore unsuitable for very young children. It is also unsuitable for those allergic to cats as we have several furry friends on the property! The 3x2 metre solar heated plunge pool is situated in a lovely secluded walled garden. There is plenty of room for erecting a tent. A large mosaic table in the garden seats up to ten guests and there is a good selection of garden furniture.
The pool and garden can be illuminated during the long, magical summer evenings. An independent timber chalet can be made available for larger groups. New for 2012, we can offer day trips in our classic motor cruiser to explore the islands off Cannes where the turquoise waters are perfect for swimming and snorkeling. For this option we can provide transport and include a picnic lunch with wine. Also night time excursions to the bay of Cannes to watch the magnificent international firework displays throughout July and August. There is also a riding school nearby. Language training in either French or English at all levels is available
Further details
Boat trips are charged separately and depend on weather conditions.
Conditions
Not suitable for very young children, the elderly or infirm. No smoking anywhere on the property is permitted in the summer, due to the very real risk of fire.

At 600 metres altitude, the Bastide enjoys a wonderful microclimate.
Summer temperatures are a degree or two lower than on the coast and the air is pure and pollution free. Nice, Monaco, Cannes and the Italian frontier are all within a short drive.
The Tourrette Levens / Falicon area
The Bastide was built on the site of a Roman encampment and artifacts are sometimes found in the grounds. From the house can be seen ruins of a medieval village and the local perched villages are fascinating to visit. The chateau at Tourrette Levens can also be seen from the garden and houses a world famous insect museum.
A large open air swimming pool with picnic area and restaurant is available in the town of Levens, a drive of around 30 minutes, and another nearby in St Andre de la Roche.

Guestbook for La Bastide
We have had a lovely and varied holiday. Nice and Antibes brilliant with the Chagall museum a definite highlight. The view of Tourrette Levens at night is quite magical. (Amanda and Raymond Thompson, August 2011).
We had a lovely time. Enjoyed especially the view from the villa which was beautiful. The kids loved the home cinema! (Nasrea and Zahid August 2011)
We spent two lovely weeks here. The weather was fantastic. So was the house and the view. We really enjoyed a lazy breakfast under the olive trees and dinner at the mosaic table. Our kids had a great time splashing in the pool.
(Mathias, Ivan and Vera, July 2010)
These are our highlights: Canyoning, kayaking, beach at Villefranche, Monaco in the evening, 'Chez Mirelle', boulangerie at Gairaut ... and the wonderful view from here!
A wonderful time ...! (The Lindsay family, Zurich, August 2009).
A most relaxing week with my niece for her 50th birthday. The views are out of this world and its so central for so many interesting and varied places, from tiny country villages to the beaches of Nice and Cannes, all within less than 30 minutes drive. Loved the local bakery in Tourrettes near the Chateaux. Thanks! (Chris, Louis and Caroline 30/05/09).
Thank you for letting us share your little piece of heaven! Having breakfast with that view through the valley to the snow capped mountains, sun baking down on you with just the sound of the birds in the background ... a priceless memory! Eze was a wonderful experience and our little trips into Nice, St Tropez, Cannes, Grasse ... magical! Supper in Tourrettes last night, another highlight with such mind blowing views!
We've never had such a quirky and magical experience. Our thanks to you both. (Tony and Cathy from South Africa 30/05/09).
"Thank you! What a lovely home you have. We've been very comfortable and been able to relax here enjoying the spectacular views. We've loved going into Nice and enjoyed the delights of the Marché des Fleurs, the great choice of restaurants during the evening, followed by a stroll on the prom - very entertaining! We particularlyenjoyed a visit to Monaco by boat from the harbour in Nice, viewing the celebs' houses at Cap Ferrat from the sea. Well worth the money! The 'Mireille' at Aspremont is a good choice for a pizza with a view from the terrace upstairs. It's a shame to leave and go back to the real world!" (Howard and Jan Samuels, Richard and Callum 12/08/06).
Lovely house and fantastic location. We really enjoyed lazing around and cooling off in the pool. Many thanks for your respect of our privacy. We all felt totally relaxed. Thanks again. (Marc, Jane, Gary and Tracey 09/06/07).
"We have had an absolutely lovely time! Thank you so much for your kind hospitality - we are going home relaxed after 10 beautiful days in your lovely home in the hills. So much so that I think we will have to be dragged out of here to home kicking and screaming!! One of the best holidays we have ever had - will be taking home many stories and smiley faces!! Thanks again" (James and Anna 18/06/07).
"Had a wonderful relaxed week. Enjoyed going to Monaco and looking at all the yachts. Nice was as great as ever wandering around the old town or just sitting watching the world go by" (The Grant Family 04/06/07).

"We have had a very enjoyable week. The weather has been very kind to us and we have had a truly unique experience. Thank you"(Kevin Kath David and Mary 10/10/07).
"We had a great stay in your wonderful, charming house. It was very relaxing and nice to get out of the hustle and bustle of Nice. We loved our day trips to Monaco and the mountains but at the end of every day we looked forward the most to returning to you farmhouse in the hills. We had a great walk up the back to the top where we had a great view of Nice. The pool was also great and a lot of fun. The kids loved the cinema and that gave us a good break! We also loved eating our dinner outside and enjoying the views. Thanks again". (The Jensen family from Australia 16/07/08)
"Thank you for letting us stay in your lovely house. We have had a great time enjoying the lovely sunny weather and great views. So many highlights including the village market at Aspremont for beautiful vegetables, fruits and recipes. Villefranche is a gem. We hired a small boat for an unforgetable day sailing around Cap Ferat. The tram is great as is Nice. Lots of lovely memories. Best wishes (Marie, Hannah, Lucy and Tomy 31/07/08).
Thanks for letting us stay in your mountain hideaway - the views are stunning. Weather was fantastic and the house and location perfect. We needed a total escape from the 'hamster wheel' of everyday life and that's exactly what we got. Totally relaxed, we're off for our next adventure. (Lisa and Neil 20/08/08).
Thank you so much for letting us share in your slice of heaven (albeit for only one glorious week)! So many memories ... the views, the cafés, the wonderful tram trip to Nice...fantastic baguettes and croissants in Tourrette Levens, great music, mushroom soup from your Elizabeth David's superb recipes !! Have I mentioned the views!! Our boys want to stay permanently in your home cinema !!! (The Parramore family, Sidney Australia 11/10/08).
