Further details indoors:
The gite has a well equipped kitchen for more adventurous cooks. Meals can be shared inside or outside in the adjacent garden under the shade of cherry trees. June is cherry season and guests are welcome to pick and eat as many cherries as they like. Local markets have fresh seasonal produce grown on our doorstep and the resident hens are happy to provide fresh eggs on request.
Bedrooms are comfortable with adequate storage. One with a king sized bed and the second is a twin with 2 small double beds. The lounge is spacious with a beamed chateau ceiling and a comfortable place to relax on hot days and evenings, with beautiful views of the Vercors mountains and Doux river valley. A wood burner in fireplace and a large flat screen television with satelite UK viewing provide cosy evenings in the winter months. The area is celebrated for cycling and June/July sees the Ardechoise one of the largest road races in France. Guests wishing to bring cycles are welcome to store them in the secure outbuildings on the farm, local rental is also available.
Further details outdoors:
The garden is private and surrounded by cherry and apricot orchards with outside furniture for relaxing and eating and a barbecue area with gas barbecue. Outside space is particularly important to us in this part of the country as much of the year is spent outdoors in garden, fields, orchards and vinyards for pleasure and work.
Walks on the Grand Randonee 42 are accessible from the doorstep and the wider area is celebrated for walking to suit all standards.

The Rhone / French Alps / Ardeche region

The Ardeche is a well known holiday destination for the French and offers some exciting opportunities for the adventurous. However, it also offers quieter, more sophisticated treats for wine lovers, gastro buffs and historians. The neighbouring department of the Drome is celebrated for its scenery and geological treasures in the hills and grottes of the region.
The Tournon sur Rhone / St Jean de Muzols area
The towns of Tournon sur Rhone and Tain L'Hermitage offer year round spectacles to visitors. Valence, the capital city of the Drome, is within a 20 minute drive of Tournon. Wine tasting, caving, canoeing, walking, swimming, horse riding are all easily found locally throughout the year. Chocoholics will delight in visiting one of the world's most distinguished chocolatiers Val Rhona in the adjoining village of Tain.

This was our second stay at Le Vitrier and as the first time (a few years back) our stay was great and met all (already high) expectations. The Gite is really well appointed with everything you need... more |

A well-equipped gite in a beautifully quiet location. Plenty of walks, river swimming in the Doux valley, and charming hill towns and villages to visit. Even though we visited in August it was fairly quiet - the area seems to be undiscovered by British visitors. Candy and Tony made us feel very welcome and their knowledge of the area was invaluable for ideas for things to do. The layout of the accommodation, including the balconies and gardens, gave us complete privacy but also meant that we could easily ask for help when needed. |

This property is so good we have rented it twice - a real hidden gem. The garden is tranquil, perfect for sunny eating out at breakfast or into the evening to the sound of cicadas in the nearby fields. The surrounding countryside is really beautiful with secluded river swimming, fabulous walks (to the river) from the cottage, vineyard visits, winetasting and really authentic markets on your doorstep - as a family of beachlovers we didn't miss the sea at all. The cottage itself is simply excellent. There is a real chef's kitchen to cook in plenty of space and all the kit to make any sort of cooking a pleasure. The views from the large lounge onto the Alps and surrounding valley from the balcony are fantastic. The beds are new and comfortable and the towels and linen better-than-hotel standard. There are also lots of special touches: feeding the goats in the owners' nearby field, a survival kit of wine, coffee, bread and cheese and most of all, friendly owners who you sense really do feel the most important thing is for you to have a wonderful stay and provide everything you need. Overall it is a stunning place to stay in a part of France which appears to be largely devoid of volume tourism and gives the real French experience. We loved it and our young children loved it. |
Guestbook for Le Vitrier
Thanks for a fabulous stay. From the welcoming bread and wine, the helpful tips and the ready access to your cherry trees. the gite is very well equipped and in such a stunning setting we could have spent the whole week just in and around here. The call of the vine kept us highly entertained and the excellent location gave us easy access to Cote Rotie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Vacqueyras. What an incredible region. All in all a wonderful holiday and we'll be recommending Le Vitrier very highly to all our friends. Nigel & Donna, Julian & Leanne, Cambridge/London, June 2010.
We had an amazing week exploring the cycling of the area including a Tour Stage (No.11 - Sisteron -Valance) and a couple of big mountain rides in the Alpes (Alpe d'Huez was really good). This would be a great location for climbers as well, we all thought as we all climb. I think we will be back. Anthony, George, Simon and friends, London/Shefield July 2010
Brilliant week, wish we could stay another, one week is far too short a stay. Gite is first class. Best equipped we've ever been to. The most beautiful scenery anywhere! All in all a fantastic holiday, but here it couldn't be anything else. Ann D, London, August 2010
We've really enjoyed our stay here. Nearly every day we've walked up from the cottage to the top road to do a circular tour of the beautiful gorges above the Doux river. The countryside around here is magnificent and the areas slightly further afield are well worth a visit. However, you really don't need to leave the environs as the garden is so relaxing and pretty. Neil and Sue, Tyne & Wear, August 2010
Thank you for a lovely Christmas away from home. Tom and I rent houses in France two or three times a year and this has been one of the best if not the best. I have often thought about having a gite and renting and I would love to think that I would provide as good a service as you. Now that we know where you are I hope we will be able to come for the occasional week-end. Tom and Theresa, Lyon/Belfast, Christmas 2010
