The Midi-Pyrenees / Hautes-Pyrenees region
The Hautes-Pyrénées is a fantastic area to explore both on foot or bike - with miles of quite country lanes and woodland tracks to discover. The Baronnies (situated just outside our town of Tournay and the foothills of the mountains) is an area of outstanding beauty - undulating forested landscape offering tracks for mountain biking and hiking - enjoy visiting Chateau Mauvezin, Abbey de l'Escaladieu, or the Gouffre at Esparos.
If you want a more challenging hike, head up into the mountains and choose from a huge selection of a marked routes including the famous GR10 taking in some of the most breathtaking scenery or you can use a local guide.
A choice of 6 ski areas to choose from (closest 45mins from The Barns (La Mongie and St Lary) There are also several cross country ski areas within easy reach.
Wonderful markets can be found in Bagneres, Trie sur Baise, Tounay, Tarbes, Lourdes, Lannemazan - every day a market is somewhere!
Wake boarding is now available at a Cable lake near Pau.
The pilgrimage town of Lourdes is only a 30 min drive.
The Pyrénéene National Park is more than 46,000 hectares of stunning, un-spoilt terrain - there is an abundance of wildlife, flora and fauna. You may spot a Royal Eagle, Bearded Vulture, Marmot or isards - bears have been re-introduced to the Pyrénées (but only 20 so a spotting is most probably unlikely!)
The Tournay area
Tourany is an ancient Bastide town dating from 1307 – mainly an agricultural community. Visit the Arboretum – created in 1938 and covers an area of 170 hectares. There is also a leisure complex including tennis courts and open air pool (Open during school summer holidays and Wednesdays). Visit the nearby Lac de Arret-Darne (and have a wonderful lunch in the restaurant (or "The shack" as we refer to it! ... our favourite place!) Or perhaps have lunch or dinner at our local auberge offering fantastic plat du jour - inviting you to eat honest, home cooked food – at great prices - wonderful!
Tournay also has a Patisserie (bar) , Boulangerie, Boucherie, Supermarket, Tabac, Post Office and Pizza Take-away!
