Enquire nowThe Midi-Pyrenees / Tarn-et-Garonne region
The Midi-Pyrenees offers visitors a beautiful landscape which incorporates rolling hills, golden sunflower fields and vineyards, bastide towns and villages, lakes and rivers and history and culture. If you are a foodie, you will be in your element here with local delicacies produced by people who are passionate about their food and wine. If history is your thing, then your only issue will be deciding which of the historic areas, churches or pilgrimage routes you wish to visit. The sporty visitor will also not be disappointed, with very cycling-friendly roads and 1000s of kilometres of walks/hikes or running-friendly routes and golf courses, not to mention the ski slopes in winter. Or you can simply enjoy the peace, quiet and beauty. Each season offers its own beauty and artists and photography enthusiasts will be spoilt for choice, whether they are beneath the warm spring skies, surrounded by blossoms, the golds and reds of autumn, the crisp but often sunny winters or the heat of the summer sun.
The Touffailles area
Touffailles is ideally located for a range of activities. The village itself has tennis courts, a fishing lake, a lavender distillery and a beautiful village church with historic monument status. In late spring there is a quad-biking event with over one hundred quad-owners signed up for the circuit and meal. In June there is a gourmet walk which consists of a 5 course meal with wine (set menu) spread out over an annually changed route that which starts and ends in the village, and culminates in patisseries and dessert wine around a bonfire (you will need sturdy shoes, your cutlery and a tourch!) The village festival also needs a mention as this is a highly sociable event that runs over 2-3 days. There is a mobile disco experience on one evening for those who are so inclined (last year with foam party), and then on another you will see hundreds of people sitting down to a 5 course meal followed by music suitable for all generations and a firework display.
If you are in the area around the 14th of July, then you can enjoy the celebrations in several villages or towns as the firework displays and accompanying events are often staggered.
You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to vineyards. Local wine producers a happy to host tastings and there are some fantastic events held at the vineyards themselves. A very short distance from Touffailles, there is one vineyard in particular where holiday-makers and locals alike can enjoy good food, wine and music outdoors with the ambiance being further enhanced as night falls and you sit beneath the stars and fairy-lights in the courtyard of the establishment.
Montaigu de Quercy and Lauzerte (10km from Touffailles) both have activity lakes with a man-made beach and on-site restaurant, as well as having a variety of other dining options. Less than a ten minute drive from Touffailles, there is a parachute school offering the possibility of a unique holiday experience for the novice or the more experienced thrill seeker. In summer, you regularly see brightly coloured parachutes in the azure sky, gliding down over the sunflower fields. If you prefer land-based activities, you could also visit one of the local horse-riding centres.
Further afield but still within an easy drive, you have the larger towns of Moissac, Agen, Villeneuve, Cahors, Toulouse and medieval Carcassone. Each has its own entertainment, history and architecture to offer.
Finally, you cannot talk about this area without mentioning the markets - you are spoilt for choice as to where to go and when you arrive you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to the fresh, locally produced fruit, vegetables, cheeses, meats, pastries.......(the list goes on and on!!)

These beautiful set of traditional french gites are set in a stunning and unspoilt area of sunflower fields, vines and rolling hills. Perfect for walking, cycling and soaking up the atmosphere. The area is also perfect for exploring the ancient towns and markets, it was peaceful, even in August. Karen and Jason were the perfect hosts, providing all the infomation and advice we needed. They organised a trip for all the guests to a nearby food and wine festival, an amazing experience. They also cooked pizzas on their outdoor wood fired oven for guests one evening - if you stay, you must try them! Before booking, I was concerned about booking a single gite from a group of three so close together, especially with an autistic child. However, I need not have worried, Karen was the perfect host, we had some wonderful evenings with other guests chatting over a glass of wine. The gites have several outdoor seating areas, each gite has it's own private seating and there is also a wonderful, vine covered shaded area or a large sunny area by the BBQ. So you can choose seclusion when you want it. Karen was also wonderful with our son, I had completely relaxed within an hour of being there and stayed that way for the whole week. Our Gite, a former cave, had a stone vaulted ceiling and was wonderfully cool in the August. The pool was a perfect place to cool down and relax & play. I could carry on raving about this place, but I would suggest you try it yourself! |
