The West Country / Devon region
Butterwells is situated in the heart of the South Hams, an Area of Outstanding Beauty. It is surrounded by wooded valleys, rivers and streams and is part of an ancient 100 acre farm, which was mentioned in the Domesday book. For those new to the area, the South Hams provides the opportunity for many of the best of outdoor pursuits, such as sailing, surfing, coastal and moorland walks, horse riding, rock climbing, canoeing, coasteering and many more. For those who prefer the quieter life there are many green lanes and hidden paths, coves and estuaries to explore.
The towns of Totnes, Dartmouth, Modbury, Salcombe and Kingsbridge are all within easy reach and each offers its own distinct history and character. The cities of Plymouth and Exeter provide large shopping malls, cinemas and the National Marine Aquarium for those less than sunny days.
Totnes area
There are so many things to do, but here are a few suggestions - Totnes for the Friday market, great coffee houses, art galleries and the atmosphere! - Salcombe, for all things nautical, and great clothes shopping - Dartmouth for boat trips, and National Trust properties of Greenway, Coleton Fishacre - Kingsbridge, a town for locals, with great leisure centre and swimming pool - Modbury, beautiful Georgian town, with antique shops, art gallery and traditional shops - National Marine Aquarium -Woodland Leisure Park, large indoor and outdoor activities for all ages -Pennywell Farm, for younger children -Steam railways at Buckfastleigh and Dartmouth - Day trip to the Eden Project - Surf School at Bigbury - Canoe trips from Totnes
But mostly relaxing in the magical atmosphere of Butterwells itself
How to get there
Butterwells is situated between Totnes and Kingsbridge and is most easily accessed from the A38. To avoid bottle-necks in Totnes we recommend continuuing on the A38 until the Modbury/Loddiswell exit. At the first T junction take a left and follow the brown signs for the Newhouse Trout Farm. You will come to a staggered crossroads, which you go straight across. You will reach "California Cross", which has a BP garage on your left and a pub on the right. Take the left turning before the garage sign posted "Moreleigh". After about two miles you will go over a hump back bridge, "Gara Bridge". Keep going up the hill and eventually you will see a blue sign on your left for the Fisheries. Take this left turn. You are now on a single lane road which leads to Cleave Farm. You will reach a large barn on your right, and see a stone ahead of you which says "Butterwells". Take the right fork here and this bends around an old barn and you will see a gravelled parking spot. There are steps infront of you to the front door of Butterwells.
