Home description

Longcombe Farm Cottages are set among the gently rolling hills of the beautiful Longcombe Valley which follows the course of the River Dart to Stoke Gabriel. We are two miles from the bustling medieval market town of Totnes which sits astride the river and offers a wealth of small shops, superb, locally sourced food and great places to eat, not to mention river trips and a castle.

The smaller town of Dartington, known for the famous glass and as a haunt of artists and writers, is within three miles while the busier resort of Torbay with its beaches, Zoo and resort attractions sits five minutes in the other direction. The vast open spaces of Dartmoor are less than half an hour away making this a perfect location whatever your holiday expectations.

Days out for all the family

There are no less than 20 Official South Devon Tourist Attractions within a 15-mile radius of Longcombe! To name but a few, the family favourites nearby include The River Dart Country Park (Victorian river parkland with nature trails and adventure play area), Paignton Zoo (100 acres, with 5 world habitat zones), The Dartmouth Woodlands Park (indoor and outdoor leisure fun), Pennywell (award winning indoor and outdoor activity centre) and the Model Village in Babbacombe (400 plus models with sound and animation).

How to get there

From Totnes:
Follow the signs for Paignton (A385), approximately 2 miles from Totnes you will see the Longcombe Garden Centre on your left hand side. Take the next turning on your right (next to a garage forecourt), which is signposted to Stoke Gabriel. Approximately 500 yards down this road you will see the sign for Longcombe Cottages on your left. Follow the arrows around to the entrance.

From Paignton:
Follow the signs to Totnes (the A385). When you are leaving the Paignton area on the A385 you will drive through a small village called Collaton St Mary and then follow the road onwards until it starts to go through farmland on each side with quite big bends in the road. As it starts to go downhill on a straight bit, you will see a garage forecourt on your left hand side coming up. The garage is called Riviera Motors and there is a small lane just beyond it with a sign for the village of Stoke Gabriel. You need to turn left here and continue down the lane about 500 yards until you see buildings on your left hand side and our cottages sign. Take the sharp turn left and follow it round and turn right into our courtyard.

Guestbook for Lomentor Cottage

We just loved Stoke Gabriel (2 miles from the cottages.) The children spent hours crabbing on the creek and the River Shack is great for ice creams and lunches. We walked over the weir at low tide and explored the woods and had a pint at the Church House Inn when we returned exhausted!

Jones Clan from Tetbury

Don’t miss the wonders of Dartmoor. We got on to the moor at Ashburton (about 8 miles) and visited Becky Falls which is beautiful, set among the trees and walk ways. We climbed Haytor which even the little ones managed. There are lots of challenging rock climbs for older children and a welcome ice cream van in the car park. The Tourist Info Centre was very helpful too. The River Dart is stunning and we loved all the old bridges and narrow roads.

Ruby and Nana

We brought our bikes and had a great week. Lots of information in the games room about routes and ideas for days out. There is a bike bus that runs across Dartmoor if you get too exhausted!

The Everards and Lloyds from Guildford

We went sailing at Salcombe and the kids loved it. We also discovered East Portlemouth on the other side of the Salcombe estuary and found a great walk straight up from the beach and over the headland.

Heidi and Gavin Wembury

We loved Totnes. The Farmer’s Market every Friday is great fun with lots of street musicians and a glorious smell of local food. The costume museum was interesting and the children really enjoyed the walk around the castle ramparts. No need to take the car to Totnes as there is an excellent bus service from Longcombe and it saves parking. You can also walk the 2 miles along a very pretty bridle path and catch the bus home.

The Wallace Family, Glos.

We had a winter visit and still found lots to do in the area. Paignton Zoo (2 miles from the cottages) was amazing and it took a full day to see it all. The new crocodile enclosure was fab. The beaches were deserted and we loved it!

Anita, Ray and kids
