Cottage | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 6
The living spaces are open plan, light and airy with wooden floors. The old barn walls and pillars form the heart of the house. Up half a level are 2 bedrooms and bathroom, with a winding staircase leading to a beautiful attic room. This is a low carbon house with solar hot water, solar electicity and wood fired heating. The land is on a hillside with beautiful views, lawns, trees, meadow and sitting decks. The veg garden is organic, and you're welcome to eat from it. You can also use the yoga studio building in the gardens for meditation, yoga, tai chi etc. We are surrounded by fields and woods, hills, valleys and streams. You can stroll out of the house and onto footpaths, green lanes and quiet country roads. Harberton has a 13th century pub, The Church House Inn, and Totnes is 2.5 miles away.

At the front of the house is a wooden porch leading into a hallway both with coat and shoe storage. The porch houses a washing machine/ tumble dryer. The large living room with sofas, armchair and wood burner opens into the kitchen and dining room which is a light space with old farmhouse table and chairs. A piano sits to one side and French doors open out onto a south facing deck. Up a few steps is a hall leading to the bathroom and 2 bedrooms. One is the main bedroom with south windows onto the garden. The other is a cosy room with single bed (extra mattress or folding bed can be put in here). The bathroom has bath, shower, sink and toilet. Up the wooden stairs is the attic room with double bed sleeping platform and 3 south facing velux windows.
Beds are futons- comfy, but firm. Many of the personal possessions in the photos will be tidied away (particularly in our daughter's room!).
|Further details outdoors|
The house is surrounded on 3 sides by terraced gardens of lawns, trees and flower beds. There's a sun deck to the south and a large trampoline.
Beyond the garden is the 'yoga house', a beautiful, light space which can be used for yoga, tai chi, meditation etc. It has it's own deck and bathroom. Beyond this the land turns to meadow with many fruit trees, a large veg patch and a compost toilet. Among the trees is a fire area surrounded by log seats. Perched on the hedge bank looking out to the hills is a deck.
There are 2 caravans and a yurt at the top of the field rented separately (to lovely people) on a long term basis, so this part of the land and the yoga house are shared. The house and it's gardens remain private and secluded.
The drive enters at the top of the land with plenty of parking.

The West Country region
South Hams is known for its quiet lanes, beautiful clean beaches, rolling hills and historic market and seaside towns. Within easy reach are also the uplands of Dartmoor, the highest and wildest place in south west England. There are beautiful walks to suit all levels of fitness, as well as seaside activities in small and large towns - the resort of Torquay is nearby.
Totnes is famous for its funky high street shops, independent character, great food and varied arts and entertainments. There are great restaurants in the town, local pubs and tea rooms overlooking quiet rivers many specialising in Devon produce. The home of Dartington estate, there are many festivals of music and literature taking place over the summer, as well as an Arts cinema. Other historic houses close by include Greenway, home of Agatha Christie and Sharpham House, making excellent wine and cheeses. On the river Dart there are opportunities for canoeing, and other water based activities. Totnes also has a long history of social activism, spiritual seekers, and is the birthplace of the Transition movement.
Harberton is one of the most beautiful South Hams villages with a fine 13th century pub, the Church House Inn, a church and playground.
