The Costa Brava/Catalonia region
The Costa Brava is one of Spain's premier tourist destinations. The name - "costa" means "coast" and "Brava" means "wild" - is evocative of the region's rugged beauty.
Along the coast, you can find many popular resorts such as Lloret de Mar with sandy beaches and fun activities for all the family. However, if that's not your cup of tea, you can stray off the beaten track and discover a wealth of hidden gems - secluded coves and tranquil fishing villages where the traditional Catalan way of life continues untouched by the modern world. One such hidden gem is the seaside town of Cadaques, the last resort before the French border. Reaching Cadaques along a winding mountain road, you discover a fishing village that has long been a Mecca for artists - Salvador Dali had a house in nearby Portlligat, and visitors included Federico Garcia Lorca, Luis Bunuel and Pablo Picasso.
But it's not all sun, sand and sangria! If you tire of the beach and the crystalline blue waters of the Mediterranean, the Costa Brava is also the gateway to the Pyrenees and blessed with some of Spain's most spectacular mountain scenery. Over 30% of the province is a specially protected natural area, making this a perfect area for hiking among the mountains and valleys. If you choose to visit us in the winter, then you can even ski in the Pyrenees just a hundred kilometres away.
Culture vultures, too, will find a lot to interest them in the Costa Brava and Catalonia. The fishing village of Cadaques is home to a vibrant art scene. The city of Girona, just 30 km from Tossa, has many well-preserved medieval buildings, including one of Spain's finest Gothic cathedrals and a fascinating museum about the thriving Jewish culture of medieval Catalonia. The area around Girona is also home to a wealth of archaeological sights showing the lingering influence of the Iberian, Greek and Roman cultures that have colonised the region at various stages in her history. One of the undeniable highlights is Empuries, a former trading centre used by both Greek and Roman settlers.
Further afield, there's the glorious city of Barcelona, justifiably famous for its architecture, art and nightlife. On a day trip to the city from Tossa, you might stroll down the Ramblas before taking in some of Antoni Gaudi's stunning buildings, such as Park Guell, Palau Guell, Casi Mila and of course the incomparable Sagrada Familia cathedral, the jewel in Barcelona's architectural crown.
Tossa de Mar area
As its name suggests, Tossa's principal attraction is its proximity to the sea. There are numerous beaches in the area offering the chance to relax in the sunshine and take a dip in the Mediterranean.
The area's beaches range from the 400-metre-long Platya Gran de Tossa de Mar, with amenities including restaurants, bars and watersports facilities, to smaller beaches and coves for a little more privacy.
In Tossa itself, you can also get a feel for the region's history and culture by paying a visit to the town museum, the medieval town and the nearby Roman ruins, before heading further afield, maybe to Girona and Cadaques. After a hard day's sightseeing and sunbathing, you're bound to feel hungry. Luckily, Tossa is home to a number of excellent restaurants serving traditional Mediterranean food.
How to get there
You can fly directly to Girona airport (just 30 km away from this property) with several airlines including Ryanair and Transavia. From Girona airport you can drive to Tossa - or if you don't fancy driving, there is a bus directly from the airport to Tossa.
If that's not convenient for you, then a large number of airlines (including Easyjet) fly to Barcelona, 100 km away from the property and easily accessible by car.
If you're already in Spain, there are regular bus services to Tossa from Barcelona's Estacio del Nord. See www.sarfa.com for more information.
Hiring a car in Spain is easy and a great way to get around! See www.hertz.co.uk for more information.
