About this location
The Catalunia region
Casa Oriole is located in a terraced valley in the foothills of the Natural Park of Serra del Boix-Cardo, in the Baix Ebre south of the province of Tarragona and less than 2 hours both Barcelona and Valencia. Very near the Natural Park of Delta del Ebro, in 10 minutes you can be surrounded by rice fields, wildlife species and numerous beaches. 15 minutes from the city of Tortosa and another 15 Ampolla, we have our supply of varied scenarios: mountains, sea and the river Ebro.
There are many interesting walks from the farm and also fantastic mountain walks in Els Ports less than one hour away by car. We have a book explaining the routes. The nearest beach is 20 minutes by car. The Delta has cycle paths along the River Ebro and the Green route (Via Verde) is a cycle and walking path along a disused railway line that starts in Tortosa and ends 96kms away in Alcaniz, it passes through the Els Ports Natural Park.
Canoes can be hired on the Delta. Tortosa hosts the Renaissance festival at the end of July and the Cinta festival in mid September. Barcelona and Valencia are two hours by car or train, the nearest station is 10 minutes by car. Reus airport is one hour by car.
There are some interesting walks from the house & we can advise when you are here. The birdlife is varied & interesting, some summer visitors are Golden Oriole, Cuckoo, BeeEater & Woodchat Shrike. Eagle Owl are here all year round & are often very close to the house. Wild Boar are also living close by.
For shopping, Tortosa is 15 minutes by car & has many big supermarkets & an indoor market selling fresh produce, there are also some specialist food shops for vegetarians & organic food. There are many modern clothes shops, tapas bars & restaurants near the town hall. The cathedral has recently been renovated & sometimes has live classical music performances, around the cathedral there are narrow streets & squares that lead to a public garden & the Parador. There are tours of the area. There is a boat journey here too that is recommended. The festival of Renaissance is in July & Virgin of Cinta in September. There is a pretty park with an excellent restaurant called “El Parc”.
Following the river Ebro from Tortosa you will reach Tivenys & Benifallet where you can rent canoes & go to Miravet where there is a castle. You can rent bicycles in Horta de Sant Joan & cycle along the Via Verde. On the Delta you can also rent canoes or boats in Riumar (also take a boat journey to the mouth of the river) & bicycles near to Poble Nou where you can go around the lagoons & to the Eucaliptus beach which is the most unspoilt & is about 30 minutes by car from the house. From there you can drive to the Salines where there are wind & kite surfers, an abundance of sea birds & in La Tancada you are almost certain to see Flamingoes. More beaches on the Delta worth visiting are Riumar (but shallow water) & Marquesa where there is a lighthouse. On the edge of the Delta in Sant Carles de la Rapita there are boats to rent that you can take to floating tapas bars! Here is a good place to buy fresh fish & seafood from the fish market by the harbour or in any of the seaside towns. In Ulldecona there are 1000 year old olive trees, an interesting church & some ancient cave paintings (also to be found in El Perelló). The best & most varied restaurants are in L'Ampolla which is about 20 minutes by car. We recommend Lo Goleró & L'Ham for seafood. From here if you take the coastal road towards El Perelló there are some interesting coves, Santa Lucia is our favourite, clear deep water, a beach bar, quiet but not sandy, it is of pebbles. Further along the coast towards Tres Callas & Hospitalet there are more coves but becomes busier. The prettiest beach is Torn near Hospitalet, it is a nudist beach & near to the Nuclear power station so the water is always warmer here!
In Els Ports Parc Natural there are many mountain walks that take you through Pine & Oak forests to Fonts, we have books in English & Catalan explaining the routes. Good places to visit are Sant Roc, (near to Pauls), Els Toscar, Font Calda (near to Gandesa), Beseit, Vall de Roures & many more. In Gandesa there is a civil war museum & a fantastic wine “cathedral”, this area is Terra Alta & renowned for good quality wine, but the best is to be found in Priorat. Near to Rasquera there is shady walk at Cardó with stunning views that takes you to 12 churches.
