The Tuscany region
Siena House is located within the confines of an ancient noble estate "La Fratta". Today its 400+ hectares are consist of biological vineyards, olive groves and mixed agricultural production.
Siena house was sold by the estate in the 1980's. The house remained uninhabited for 20 years
until it was renovated in 2007. The land surrounding the house consists of gentle rolling wooded hills with long quiet walks through vineyards into the rolling wooded hills.
The panoramic 360 degree views from the house encompass long views across the Val di Chiana to the Apennines, with the town of Cortona nestled on the slopes. Nearer by, the hill town of Montepulciano can be seen and 1km distant, the famous hotel Locanda Amorosa (very good restaurant), cuts an impressive site with her long cypress lined drive. In all, some 8 different Tuscan hill towns can be viewed from the house.
As to the weather, temperatures in Tuscany very widely from -8C in the winter to +36C in the summer. In the summer, thunderstorms otfen roll in with spectacular displays. The house benefits greatly from its elevated position at the base of a valley. There is nearly always a gentle breeze at the house - as befits its local name, Poggio al Vento (Windy Knoll)
Torrita di Siena
MONTEPULCIANO (15mins) is a medieval and Renaissance hill town and is a major producer of food and drink. Wine connoisseurs consider its Vino Nobile among Italy's best. Annual summer events include world renowned classical music concert programmes.
PIENZA (20min) Pienza is a town on the edge of the Val d'Orcia. In 1996, UNESCO declared the town a World Heritage Site, and in 2004 the entire valley, the Val d'Orcia, was included on the list of UNESCO's World Cultural Landscapes. The town was constructed as a summer Papal retreat for Pope Pius II, a local lad that made it quite literally to the top. Pienza is a rare example of Renaissance town design. Often described as the "ideal city" or the "utopian city", it represents one of the best planned of Renaissance towns. Views over the Val D'Orcia to the dormant volcano, Monte Amiata, are heart stopping. The film, English Patient, was shot in and around Pienza.
ARREZO (30mins) is a city famous for gold working. Art holds focus here with the frescoes of Piero della Francesca and home of the father of art history, Giorgio Vasari both on public view.
SIENA (40mins) is a city firmly rooted in its past – there are countless galleries and museums in which to learn about its glorious Gothic history and tradition remains strong: among its wackier customs the biannual bareback horse race (Palio) around the Campo.
Nearby Rapolano Terme (20mins) offers 2 thermal baths. they are both considered to have therapeutic healing properties - even if you do not believe or need the "cure" they are well worth a dip.
