The Costa Blanca/Valencia region

The first thing that draws your attention in Torrevieja is its setting. There are two salt lagoons, one pink and the other green, which make up the La Mata and Torrevieja Lagoons Nature Reserve. Together, they cover a total of 3,700 Hectares, which represents 52% of the local terrain, and contain enormous biological wealth. They are well renown both at national and international levels. It therefore becomes clear right from the beginning that this is truly a unique tourist municipality, whose natural surroundings represent a wonderful tourist asset.

When we talk about this city we essentially refer to two things: salt and sea. Firstly salt, because it is the real origin of this town. For centuries, the Torrevieja area has been a wonderful spot for mining the salt generated in the Torrevieja Lagoon. This was the real origin of the city and lead to the foundation of the town. The inhabitants of Torrevieja (lit. Old Tower) then began to develop a town, whose name comes from the old Torre Vigía (Watchtower), or Vieja (Old), set in the Eras de la Sal (salt beds), the old salt pier. It was at this time that different activities began to develop, among them the salt sea trade bound for the ports of the Caribbean. This highly valued mineral was exchanged for exotic products such as sugar cane, mahogany wood, etc. As a result of these journeys, the habanera was born. This was a classic Torrevieja song which the sailors adapted as a way of expressing their experiences on the long crossings. One of the city's most important cultural events is the International Habanera and Polyphony Contest. It is an international event where you will be able to enjoy songs which originated from the crossings made by the Torrevieja sailors to the Caribbean. Every year, at the end of July, you can enjoy this melody on the sea shores, in the old area where the Torrevieja sailors previously piled up salt to later transport it to the merchant ships.

Torrevieja Town

El Cura beach, Torrevieja

This is the most popular beach, as it is integrated within the town's urban area.

This beach is 325 metres long and 27 metres wide, and it is the nearest beach to the centre of the town. To the south it adjoins the Juan Aparicio Esplanade as well as the restaurant El Tintero, and to the north it adjoins the Monument to the Mediterranean Cultures, also known as "the Columns". It has a nice and recently renovated seafront full of bars, souvenir shops, ice-cream parlours and restaurants. We highly recommend visiting the restaurant Pizza Nº1, where you will be able to taste delicious dishes with a wonderful sight of the sea.

At the beginning of the beach we can find the restaurant El Tintero, which was almost entirely built above the water and where you can enjoy a huge variety of fish dishes and paellas during the summer.

In the summer it is the venue for the “Noche de Habaneras en la Playa” –Habaneras night at the beach-, an event attracting many people to have dinner and listen to the music of the Habaneras. It has a tourist info centre, 4 surveillance towers, 4 lifeguards right on the seafront and a first aid station.

It is worth mentioning it has many services to offer for all tourists, such as chiringuitos, kiosks, restaurants, ice-cream parlours to have something to eat or drink among swings, and many things more.

Los Locos Beach Torrevieja

It owes its name –the madmen beach- to an old mental hospital which was located in the past next to this beach.

The Los Locos Beach, which owes its name to an old mental hospital which was located in the past next to this beach, is a long beach with fine and golden sand and quiet waters with an extension of 760 metres and a width of 25 meters.

It is situated at the north of the town, just after the Palangre cove and curve.

It has 4 surveillance towers, 4 lifeguards right on the seafront, a first aid station and 2 health-workers-lifeguards as well as many bars and restaurants.

It is one of the beaches where you can find a platform in the sea as well as one of the famous climbing pyramids made of robes.

There is a bus stop (line A) just facing the beach.
