The Valenciana region

The Costa Blanca - South-eastern Spain - Without doubt a huge majority of visitors who travel to the Costa Blanca each year do so mainly to take advantage of the sun, the sea and the beaches, It would be a mistake however to think that this is all the Costa Blanca has to offer, a quick glance at a travel guide of the area will confirm that there are a great many places of interest to visit and enjoy.

Exactly where the Costa Blanca (White Coast) begins and ends is not clearly defined but the region comprises approximately 200 km of coastline stretching from Gandia in the north to Pilar de la Horadada in the south, it also takes in a large hinterland with areas of mountains, sierras, river valleys and natural parks. The area to the north of Gandia is called the Costa del Azahar (Orange Blossom Coast) and the area to the south of Pilar is known as the Costa Calida (Warm Coast).

The entire Costa Blanca region has a rich and distinguished history and many artefacts have been found dating back to the Neolithic Era. Lying as it does in an important strategic position on the Mediterranean coastline, the Costa Blanca has been invaded and occupied by various important civilizations including Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths, Carthaginians and Moors. Each civilization has left its own identity on the region and each has resulted in significant cultural and religious consequences for the indigenous population. Perhaps the greatest influences on the region were caused during the Roman and Arab occupations, which both moulded the areas subsequent history.

A different kind of invasion occurred during the 20th Century - that of tourism, and this has probably resulted in the most rapid and dramatic changes in the Costa Blanca’s history so far. A huge amount of development has taken place and the economy of the region has undergone sweeping changes. Towns and villages which formerly relied on fishing, agriculture and salt production now rely almost entirely on tourism and related industries and many new jobs have been created, increasing the wealth of the region and its inhabitants.

The main attraction for holidaymakers (especially north Europeans) is of course the wonderful climate, with over 300 days of sunshine each year and very low rainfall, it is the perfect location for a relaxing summer holiday or a well earned winter break. Sunshine is virtually guaranteed from May to October so it is not necessary to confine visits to the popular months of July and August. In the months of December and January the Costa Blanca normally enjoys some beautiful sunny days, so it is a great place to take a break away from the dismal weather of the UK and other north European countries.

The Costa Blanca has some of the best beaches in Spain and they are usually very well cared for and safe, there are a large number of ‘blue flag’ beaches and these are normally cleaned every day and will often have life-guards on duty during the busy summer months. Some of the more popular beaches can get busy during July and August but if you take some time to explore a little, you may find quiet and isolated beaches even during the high season.

Overall the Costa Blanca has much to offer holidaymakers and tourists of all types, fine beaches for sun lovers, ancient towns and cities for culture lovers and wonderful natural parks for nature lovers. Try a visit some time soon and enjoy a little of what the Costa Blanca has to offer.

Torrevieja Area

There are numerous bars, shops and restaurants all within a few minutes walk from the apartment. In addition to the communal pool, just a short walk away is the Emerald Isle Bar/Restaurant which also has a large swimming pool situated in beautiful gardens. This place is ideal for families as in addition to the pool it also has a kiddies playground and evening entertainment. It is surrounded by a high hedge and with only one way in and out it makes it easy to keep track of the kids. It also has a bowling club and hosts tournaments throughout the year.

3 minutes walk from the apartment is the Wicklow Arms / Abbey, which has entertainment most nights and normally stays open until 3 or 4 in the morning most of the year.

10 minutes walk from the apartment is Consum, a large modern supermarket, also Via Park 3 commercial centre with 2 floors of bars and restaurants. There is a market Saturday mornings in Playa Flamenca that is within walking distance.

There are many great sandy beaches in the area such as Playa Flamenca, La Zenia, Mil Palmeras and Cabo Roig. During the holiday season these have life guards on them and little refreshment huts aswell.

For golfers its only a 10 minute drive to the golf courses of Villamartin, Campoamor and Las Ramblas.

Torrevieja is just North of us and is surrounded by two large and beautiful natural salt water lakes which form the "Salinas de Torrevieja" and are an official Spanish nature reserve. These lakes attract a wide variety of bird life.

The city of Torrevieja which gets its name from an old tower (old=vieja ; tower=torre), was first mentioned around 1800. It became famous in 1802, when it took over the salt administration from Orihuela. Apart from the salt industry, tourism and fishing keep the city alive. The harbour gives home to 300 fishing ships and over 900 private sports boats. A wonderful view, especially when the sun sets.

The weather in Torrevieja makes it an ideal location for year round holiday activities - especially if you want to fulfil that yearning to get away during those dark, dreary winter months to the sunnier parts of Europe.

On average, Torrevieja enjoys 320 days of sunshine per year and an average daily temperature of 18°C. Temperatures in July and August are typically 30°C. Many people prefer the months April, May, June, September, October and November.

"it does what it says on the tin"

spent 16 nights in this accomodation at the end of august the start of september, great apartment everything was clean and tidy when we got there thanks to mike and jacqui. much praise also to belinda who picked us up and dropped us off at the airport. very nice lady indeed. she helped us in many ways regarding info about the area and she had no hesitation taking you anywhere (if she wasn`t busy) especially for cigs as you can`t buy them in the shops or supermarkets but fortunately her hubby smoked and she took him and myself to the tabacs on a friday in torrevieja. the apartment itself as i said was clean and tidy the living/dining area was more than ample for the four of us that were there, big enough bathroom with shower. the bedrooms were all single bedded and have ceiling fans fitted which was fine in the larger of the two bedrooms but the smaller one which me and my partner moved into when her parents came over was small, my feet hung over the end of the bed and although it had a ceiling fan was very hot and stuffy at night. would be more suitable as a kids room. there was plenty of wardrobe space for hanging clothes in both room. the rooftop solarium was a good size, big enough to get the parasol up four chairs and a table as well as four loungers. it does have a see view but at quite a distance. don`t be fooled by the communal pool, although there is one there and it was good enough to swim in i was led to believe that it was adjacent to the property ha ha. it`s about a 75 metre walk from the apartment and is gated which was quite good as not anybody could get in to use it. there are no loungers or tables infact all that was there were a two concrete slab chairs to sit on. this is a great place to stay if you`re looking for a more sedate and chilled holiday as there isn`t a lot going on around. the JUmerca supermarket is ample for all your daily requirements and more. LA TORRE whch is a bar/resteraunt next door to the supermarket does a fantastic half chicken and chips for 8 euro. next dorr to that was Waldemars bar/resteraunt which always served us a fantastic meal and have entertainment on usually starting around 9:30 pm (elvis was great) Alfredo`s was a resteraunt across the street and formed part of the Abbey Tavern (which is where we caught up with the flamnco dancers) they also have entertainment on every night. they also have a large play area for the kids including bouncy castles and climbing frames as well as kids entertainment before the adults starts. then there was the Mosquito bar where we encountered a rather eventfull nights dining when the policia arrived and all the staff downed tools and aprons and made for the nearest exit leaving a lot of people sitting waiting for food especially one young couple who ended up arguing over the fact infront of everyone when she then proceeded to through a drink all over him (ah the memories ha ha). a 5 minute walk brings you too the Emerald isle where you can buy food and drink, you can hire sun loungers and pay for a swim they have a kiddies area and also a bowling area too. it`s cheaper to buy a pass for this place if your going to be using it everyday. a further 5 minutes past this is Via Park 111 where there are more resteraunts and bars and behind them a large Aldi. we travelled into Torrevieja for the day too at about 15 euro for a taxi. plenty to see and do there, funfair which opens later at night, market stalls selling the usual holiday tat and the beach of course with some great walkways along the prom. great holiday, would go back but probably nearer playa flamenca or punta prima
