The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region
The Costa Blanca or White Coast extends along the eastern coast of Spain (approximately in the middle) and covers the province of Alicante. The Costa Blanca has the best all year round temperatures. The climate is recognised as one of the best in the world by the World Health Organisation. Many people with arthritis come to the Costa Blanca and within days feel much better. In the winter months the Costa Blanca is lucky enough to have nearly as many sunny days as in the summertime. The Costa Blanca is famous for its tourism. Once upon a time the places along the coast were mostly just tiny fishing villages. Then the fantastic climate and beaches attracted tourists and the area boomed. Some towns have restricted their development and retained their original charms while others have over-developed and lost what charm they originally had. The Costa Blanca has over 100 kms of sandy beaches and rocky coves and many of the beaches have the coveted European Blue Flag signifying cleanliness and safe bathing. The Costa Blanca is a beautiful region with mountains stretching along most of the coast. The A7 motorway (with some toll sections) stretches from north to south along the coast. The N-332 also runs parallel yet is free from charges although much slower as it passes through the middle of many towns. There are huge amounts of flights into Alicante airport, especially from Northern Europe. Valencia airport to the north is also well serviced. Further to the south of the Costa Blanca is Murcia airport. With the advent of many low-cost airlines many people live in Spain and commute to work in England. Flying time is only about 2 hours which often doesn't get you far when driving on congested roads in England. The Costa Blanca isn't necessarily a place one would go to see historical monuments (although there are many). It's attractions lie in it's beauty - the amazing vivid blue Mediterranean waters, the lovely sandy beaches, the old towns and villages with their old narrow streets, the restaurants and bars where one can sit and relax outside because of the wonderful all-year round climate. It's simply a wonderful place in which to enjoy life (as we should do but often don't) and feel rejuvenated and refreshed. You will love it!
Torrevieja area / Torrelamata area
Torrevieja is located in the Spanish region of Alicante on the Costa Blanca. Beautiful sandy beaches, Europe's biggest salt flats bursting with bird life, historic sites and a huge variety of Spanish and international restaurants.just a very few of the reasons to book a holiday here. Torrevieja is just 35 kilometres south of Alicante's international airport, El Altet. Flights from London take about two and a half hours. The easy access to Torrevieja for foreign visitors and its wide range of facilities and attractions make this a popular year-round holiday destination. The town is located at the southern end of the Valencian community and is famous for the two huge saltwater lagoons which surround it. These "Salterns of Torrevieja" are the second biggest in the world and certainly the largest in Europe. The lagoons have been designated as national parks and are an impressive sight, attracting more than 250 bird species including flamingoes. Torrevieja used to be the home port of the largest fleet of sailing boats in the Mediterranean and still boasts one of Spain's best yacht clubs, with berths for 1,500 boats. In fact the town provides first class facilities for lovers of all sports - there are golf clubs, a flying club, a variety of water sports and the municipal stadium with an athletics track, sauna and covered courts for tennis and a variety of other sports. There's a good variety of shops and the major commercial centre of Alicante is only 47 kilometres to the north. Torrevieja also has a bull ring - still a favoured attraction for the Spanish - a water park, fairground, theatre and several cinemas. Fiestas are held here most months of the year when tourists mingle with the locals to party in the streets in true Spanish-style. Visit in August and you'll be able to enjoy the weeklong "Habaneras" festival - a major international music competition which attracts a live and television audience of hundreds of thousands of people. Las Habaneras are a celebration of the Latin American music and rhythms brought to Torrevieja in the 19th century through the port's salt-trading links with Cuba. For "foodies", Torrevieja is a gastronomic paradise with a mouthwatering variety of restaurants of all kinds. Along with the local fresh fish restaurants and typical cuisine of the region you'll find a wealth of international restaurants.
