The Costa Blanca/Valencia region
The Costa Blanca, is well known for the wonderful beaches and fantastic weather that provides over 300 days of sunshine per year. Added to that is the fact that it is well-geared up for the Tourism industry, relying heavily on the visitors for the local economic success. As a result, there are bars and restaurants a-plenty, offering competitive deals such as ‘Menu Del Dia’, ‘Dish of the day’ that often provides a high quality dining experience for under 10 Euros. If the sun, sea and sand isn’t your thing, there are hidden treasures in the major towns and cities such as Alicante, Cartagena, Murcia and Torrevieja.
Alicante has an atmospheric boulevard with palm trees and shopping streets, with architectural interest in the Old Town. With many historical buildings, Alicante provides sightseeing attractions, from cathedrals and churches to historic castles, as well as a delightful harbour. Murcia was founded in approximately 800AD and has a wealth of historical and architectural tourism, as well as being a thriving University city with a lively cultural centre. Cartegena, further down the coast, has a legacy in the Spanish Civil war that makes for a compelling experience. Finally, Torrevieja is a favourite of both Spanish and Northern European tourists, with a huge variety of things to do.
However, the miles and miles of golden sand are difficult to beat, anywhere in the world. The coastal towns and villages all offer their own signature experiences to make a perfect day beside the seaside. Public transport is plentiful and inexpensive, as is car hire if required.
The apartment is located almost halfway between the beaches of Torrevieja and La Mata. There are parts of the Torrevieja area that are beginning to look tired and less favoured these days, so don't assume it's all the same quality - Aguas Nuevas is a well-maintained strong community that taes pride in its living standards and appearance. Torrevieja is busy, bustling, a great favourite with 'inland' Spaniards in need of a seaside break, and has shopping, amenities, sightseeing, including the world famous 'Salt lakes' where you can float in the therapeutic waters, very similar to the 'Dead Sea' - an unforgettable experience. La Mata is smaller, with a boardwalk featuring beachfront bars and restaurants - both can be reached by either a 20 minute walk or a bus-ride. However, within 5 mins walk of the apartment are many little bars and restaurants, so you don't need to venture far to find your favourite food or drink. Self catering is easy, with a new Mercadona supermarket, with English speaking staff if you get stuck at the luxurious fresh fish counter!
