TORREVIEJA AND THE SURROUNDING AREA HISTORY In Roman times, the area was well renowned for its outstanding port facilities, (Embarcadero Romano), the remains of which can still be seen at La Mata. The town of Torrevieja dates from the 18th century and started out as a fishing village built around one of the many watchtowers which flank the Costa Blanca coastline. They were used in the Middle Ages to warn the local inhabitants of attacks by Barbary Pirates and this particular tower was called the Old Tower, (La Torre Vieja) from which the village took its name. Many of the fishermen who fished from here were of Italian extraction from the island of Tabarca, located off Alicante. They had originally settled on Tabarca to expel Berber pirates who used the island as a refuge. Fishermen still work from the harbour although it has expanded to include modern mooring facilities used by sailors and people from around the world. THE SALT WORKS A feature of the geography and history of Torrevieja is the salt lagoon and salt works. The lagoon, extending to over 2500 acres, contains over 8 million tons of salt which is created by the filtration of the sea water in the lagoon crystallising as it evaporates. The salt has a characteristic pink colour caused by the Artemia Salina micro-organism similar to plankton. The salt works are considered to be the largest in Europe and second in the world after the Dead Sea in Israel. Salt is exported to industries all over the world and, amongst others, is used for salting and conserving meat and for use as a water softener and for keeping roads and runways clear of ice. THE TOWN OF TORREVIEJA Torrevieja is in the Province of Alicante in the south of the Comunidad of Valencia. It extends to 72 square kilometres and has a population of 100,000 in low season, rising to around 500,000 in the months of July and August. The area boasts over 300 sunny days and only 30 days of rain in the year, with an average temperature of 18 degrees centigrade during the winter. The whole of the Valencian coastline is under the watchful eye of the EEC. There are quality levels for the cleanliness of coastal waters and of the beaches and the amenities which they provide. Nearly every beach in Torrevieja has been awarded the top accolade – the Blue Flag. The Nature Park of La Mata Lagoon and the Torrevieja Lagoon are protected nature areas and are included in the list of the most humid zones in Europe. The Casino building on Paseo Vistalegre in front of the harbour dates from the 19th century and is currently used both as a café and for many cultural activities. The church was built in 1844 on the foundations of the previous temple which dated back to 1788. Built of brick and stone, the stone used was taken from the old look-out tower and transported to the town by labourers employed in the saltworks. The centrepiece, originally set in the original church in 1791, is the image of the Immaculate Conception, the patron saint of Torrevieja. In the general area South of Torrevieja is La Manga: which is probably the best known resort in the area, the prestigious La Manga Club is located here and boasts a five star hotel, casino, world class sports facilities with 3 championship golf courses, tennis and professional football centres. Following the coastline north along the maritime walk brings you to Cabo Roig, one of the area’s many marinas. From the historic watchtower and excellent restaurants, stunning views across the bay to La Manga can be enjoyed. The Mar Menor (small sea) is the largest salt lake in Europe and the water’s healing powers are well known. With a maximum depth of only 8m and temperatures higher than average, the area is renowned for its water sports and has 13 scuba schools and 19 international standard sailing schools. FESTIVALS There are fiestas in Torrevieja almost every month throughout the year. The town’s own fiesta is based on the Habaneras, which are traditional songs originating from Cuba as a consequence of the salt trade. The first of the Habaneras was celebrated in 1955 and is today an annual international event, celebrated in the enclosure of the Eras de la Sal, normally during the first week of August. The Easter street procession of Semana Santa is a riot of colour where the fraternities parade in their robes and matching hoods. At the beginning of May, a mini-town of casetas is laid out near the harbour and there are competitions, traditional Sevillian dancing, and dressage events. Music, wine tasting and general celebrations are the order of the day (and night). SHOPPING Torrevieja town centre offers a considerable range of shops, from the ‘1 Euro’ shops to quality designer clothing shops and banks. The shops open around 10am and close around 1pm, opening again around 5pm until 9pm. Banking hours vary but generally the banks close around 1 or 2pm and they are not open on Saturdays. There are numerous supermarkets in the area where there is an increasing amount of British products on offer. The largest supermarket is Carrefour which offers everything from a tin of beans to a washing machine. Torrevieja’s weekly outdoor market is held near the bus station every Friday. It starts early in the morning and lasts until about 2pm and offers a considerable range of food, clothes and household goods, and in the daily indoor fish market you can buy an amazing variety of fresh fish. There is also a craft market, held every evening along the promenade in the centre of town. SPORTS AND SOCIAL The Comunidad of Valencia currently boasts fifteen golf courses of which six are 18 holes/par 72, and are located in the Torrevieja area. Villamartin is probably the best known and was the venue for the 1994 Mediterranean Open. A multi million pound golf and social club, Real Club de Golf Campoamor is close to Villamartin and just a mile away is the challenging course of Las Ramblas de Orihuela with its hilly terrain and perilous ravines, providing a stiff test for golfers of all levels. The La Marquesa course is approximately six miles away. There are two modern marinas in Torrevieja, offering over 1,500 berths for rental or sale with a complete range of services for sailing, yachting and diving. There are a further four along the twelve mile stretch of coast with others planned for the future. The sports and leisure facilities in Torrevieja expand every year. There is a new football stadium and an Olympian racetrack. The wide range of facilities includes gymnasium, tennis courts, soccer pitches, bowls clubs and, of course, line dancing. There are numerous clubs and societies to suit all needs. They are listed in the local papers with contact phone numbers. Music of all types can be found in many bars and restaurants and , if the more energetic night life is what you want, there are clubs and discos for all ages.
The Torrevieja Area / Los Altos/Punta Prima area
The Costa Blanca literally translates as the white coast, and is so named because of its wonderful pale sandy beaches and rocky coves which stretch for more than 200 kilometres. The coastline boasts 48 EU blue flags, the award given to Europe’s beaches for cleanliness, safety and service. There are a variety of water sports available, such as surfing, diving, water skiing, sailing, fishing, ski-parachuting or jet skis. Boats can usually be hired through local harbours and there are also organised trips for those who want to see a bit of the coastline from the sea. Torrevieja is a popular holiday spot and offers the superb facilities of the two main beaches, Los Locos and El Cura. Los Locos is situated to the North of the town centre and is 780 metres long with fine sand on rocks. The town centre can be reached along a promenade connecting with many other beaches including El Cura. From Torrevieja, travel South along the coast and take your pick from the wonderful beaches at Punta Prima, Playa Flamenca, La Zenia, Cabo Roig, Campoamor and Mil Palmeras. These all offer good facilities including sunbeds and parasols for hire, First Aid posts, toilets and snack bars. During the busier months, lifeguards are on duty at the beaches to make sure that no accidents occur and bathers should always take notice of the flags showing how safe bathing is for that particular day. RED means swimming is not allowed as the conditions are too dangerous, YELLOW indicates that certain precautions and care should be taken and GREEN shows the water is safe. Most of the Costas’ beaches shelve gradually into the sea, offering safe bathing for all the family, but children should never be left unattended or allowed out of their depth with lilos or airbeds. This was an absolutely fantastic holiday. We went with our 5 and 3yr old boys. From the moment we booked we had information sent from the owners regarding the property, the surrounding area and places of interest. The accommodation was just as described and was fully equipped with everything you would need. From day1 the apartment and complex had a very homely feel. The pools were great, with a life guard there everyday it kept the area safe and tidy and there was a certain amount of 'pool etiquette' which made for a relaxing time - even with children!!! We found the Cabo Roig beach perfect for us and the children which was only a short drive away. We will be going again next year. Hopefully. |
