The Costa Blanca/Valencia region

The Costa Blanca (White Coast) refers to the over 200 kilometres of coastline on the central to South Eastern area of Spain. Alicante in Spanish (or Alacant Valencian) is a province of Spain, in the southern part of the Valencian Community. It is sandwiched by the provinces of Murcia on the south-west, Albacete on the west, Valencia on the north, and the Mediterranean Sea on the east. The province gets its name from its capital, the city of Alicante

The name “Costa Blanca” was devised as a promotional name used by British European Airways when they launched their air service between London and Valencia in 1957. Since then, it has a well developed tourism industry and is a massively popular destination for British and German tourists. It extends from the towns of Denia in the north, beyond which lies the Costa dels Tarongers, to Torrevieja in the south, beyond which lies the Costa Calida. It includes the major tourist destinations of Benidorm and Alicante.

The main industries in Alicante province are, in the primary sector, intensive agriculture, specially in the fertile Vega Baja del Segura, Camp d’Elx (Elche’s countryside) and vineyards in the inner part of the province (Monforte, Novelda, Pinós), also near the coast in the Marina Alta area. Fishing is important all along the coast, with important fishing harbours such as Santa Pola, Calp or Denia.

Industry has been historically important in the textile sector around Alcoy. Footwear still remains as the flagship industrial sector of the province, which occurs in Elche, Elda, Petrer and Villena, both labour intensive footwear and, specially, textile are at a low ebb due to harsh competition from fast pace growing economies in Asia. The traditionally important toys industry around the Tibi and Onil area is another one competing internationally with those same areas.

A sector which has gained prominence during the last 20 years is marble quarrying and processing, it happens mostly in the Novelda and Pinós area.

Torrevieja Area

A bus service within two minutes of the Property allows easy and economical journeys into Torrevieja. There is a taxi rank or car hire facilities if required.

Torrevieja has, in recent years, grown to be one of the most popular and important centres on the Mediterranean sea for residential tourism. Torrevieja's seafront offers a lot of restaurants, markets, tapas bars and street cafes on the very wide promenade which is popular for evening strolls.

Enjoy Torrevieja's magnificent Friday market which sells everything from fruit and vegetables to housing accessories and gifts. There is an indoor market in the town centre open daily for fish, vegetables and meat. Fresh seafood and fish can be bought daily at the port of Torrevieja. A new Habernas shopping centre houses many international retailers including H&M, C&A, Zara and Puma.

Each month Torrevieja celebrates a different Festival, or 'Fiesta' with a riot of colour, tradition, music and dance, including la Habanera, a special rejoicing of Torrevieja's sailing history and early salt trade days with Cuba.

Las Salinas

Local to Torrevieja are two large natural saltwater lagoons, known as "las Salinas", the largest in Europe. The concentration of salt in these picturesque lagoons helps to draw the moisture out of the air. This, combined with the very low annual rainfall, creates the unique microclimate with low humidity. With most days being sunny, and with an average temp of 18 degrees centigrade, make this area ideal for sufferers of rheumatism, arthritis and asthma. These lakes are also home to a host of wildlife including large flocks of flamingos.

"Clean and comfortable"

From start to finish we were looked after in a superb fashion the house was superb the pool was great everything was first class thanks for everything… More

Thank you very much for your comments regarding our property CASA IRIA, we do try to make every effort to please our clients and give as much information on the local area as possible, we have lived locally to the area for 10 years so we have a good knowledge of the best restaurants and Cafés to head for. we look forward to meeting again in the future.
