The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region

The Costa Blanca - South-eastern Spain - Without doubt a huge majority of visitors who travel to the Costa Blanca each year do so mainly to take advantage of the sun, the sea and the beaches, It would be a mistake however to think that this is all the Costa Blanca has to offer, a quick glance at a travel guide of the area will confirm that there are a great many places of interest to visit and enjoy.

Exactly where the Costa Blanca (White Coast) begins and ends is not clearly defined but the region comprises approximately 200 km of coastline stretching from Gandia in the north to Pilar de la Horadada in the south, it also takes in a large hinterland with areas of mountains, sierras, river valleys and natural parks. The area to the north of Gandia is called the Costa del Azahar (Orange Blossom Coast) and the area to the south of Pilar is known as the Costa Calida (Warm Coast).

The entire Costa Blanca region has a rich and distinguished history and many artefacts have been found dating back to the Neolithic Era. Lying as it does in an important strategic position on the Mediterranean coastline, the Costa Blanca has been invaded and occupied by various important civilizations including Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths, Carthaginians and Moors. Each civilization has left its own identity on the region and each has resulted in significant cultural and religious consequences for the indigenous population. Perhaps the greatest influences on the region were caused during the Roman and Arab occupations, which both moulded the areas subsequent history.

A different kind of invasion occurred during the 20th Century - that of tourism, and this has probably resulted in the most rapid and dramatic changes in the Costa Blanca’s history so far. A huge amount of development has taken place and the economy of the region has undergone sweeping changes. Towns and villages which formerly relied on fishing, agriculture and salt production now rely almost entirely on tourism and related industries and many new jobs have been created, increasing the wealth of the region and its inhabitants.

The main attraction for holidaymakers (especially north Europeans) is of course the wonderful climate, with over 300 days of sunshine each year and very low rainfall, it is the perfect location for a relaxing summer holiday or a well earned winter break. Sunshine is virtually guaranteed from May to October so it is not necessary to confine visits to the popular months of July and August. In the months of December and January the Costa Blanca normally enjoys some beautiful sunny days, so it is a great place to take a break away from the dismal weather of the UK and other north European countries.

The Costa Blanca has some of the best beaches in Spain and they are usually very well cared for and safe, there are a large number of ‘blue flag’ beaches and these are normally cleaned every day and will often have life-guards on duty during the busy summer months. Some of the more popular beaches can get busy during July and August but if you take some time to explore a little, you may find quiet and isolated beaches even during the high season.

Overall the Costa Blanca has much to offer holidaymakers and tourists of all types, fine beaches for sun lovers, ancient towns and cities for culture lovers and wonderful natural parks for nature lovers. Try a visit some time soon and enjoy a little of what the Costa Blanca has to offer.

Torrevieja area / La Mata area

The weather in La Mata is mostly sunny and dry and this region of Spain enjoys hot summers and mild winters making it an ideal year round climate.

Just north, and now virtually joined to the bustling Costa Blanca town of Torrevieja, is the traditional Spanish village of La Mata. A seaside town with one of the best beaches on the Costa Blanca, La Mata grew up around the salt industry, and until the headquarters for the administration of salt was moved to Torrevieja in 1802 it was the most important centre along this part of the coast.
The history of salt production in La Mata (from the La Mata salt lagoon) goes back to Roman times, when salt was valued highly and even used as currency. Later on the revenue created by the La Mata salt lake was reputed to have financed the expeditions of Christopher Columbus.
In Roman times this area was well known for its outstanding port. The remains of the "embarcadero romano" (Roman Docks) can still be seen near the ancient watch tower of La Mata.

Nowadays the La Mata salt lake is part of a protected Natural Park ( Parque Natural de La Mata y Torrevieja) and is an important refuge for many species of bird life.

La Mata is the location of a popular street market - held every Wednesday, it is open from 8am to 1pm and is a great place to stock up on fresh, locally grown fruit and vegetables, and also shoes, handbags and other products. The location of the market is Canal de Acequión.
There are an abundance of bars and restaurants in La Mata to cater for everyone's budgets and tastes.
We love strolling along the La Mata promenade in the evening to build up an appetite, then finding a nice restaurant overlooking the sea.

Fiestas in La Mata - As with all Spanish towns and villages La Mata has its share of fiestas and celebrations, including the Virgen del Carmen in July and the Virgen del Rosario in October.

You won't be short of things to do and places to visit in Torrevieja whether you're a sports lover, food fan, history buff or simply a sun worshipper. There is a great evening market held in the town centre, around Avenida la Libertad and Paseo Vista Alegre, where you can find everything from local handicrafts and souvenirs to clothing, accessories including great leather items, shoes & jewellery such as diamond eternity rings and even engagement rings and diamond wedding rings!

This ancient sea port is steeped in history and you can still see many reminders of its colourful past. There are the "embarcadero romano", the old Roman docks at La Mata and along the coast you'll see the ancient watch towers of La Mata and El Moro - used in the Middle Ages to warn the local inhabitants of impending attacks by Barbary pirates.

Fiestas are held here most months of the year when tourists mingle with the locals to party in the streets in true Spanish-style.

Try to plan your visit around one of the many local fiestas which take place throughout the year so you can party Spanish-style. There's the feast of the Three Wise Men on the night of January 5th, it's carnival time in February, the Holy Week processions in April and the May Fair the following month.

But it's in the summer months that the biggest celebrations take place and the town never sleeps. June sees the burning of huge papier mache effigies in the street for the feast of San Juan. In July there's the feast of the Virgen del Carmen and the election of Torrevieja's "Queen of Salt".

One of the biggest festivals of the year is the "Habaneras" international music contest which takes place in August. Torrevieja swings for a week to the soulful rhythms of the melodies brought back from Latin America in the late nineteenth century when the town's salt trade with Cuba was at its peak. The festival attracts a live and television audience of hundreds of thousands of people. It's a great time to holiday here?but book your accommodation well in advance!

The town square is very picturesque. At Christmas it hosts a magnificent Nativity scene, which covers a large proportion of the square.

The Costa Blanca offers a variety of golf courses. The five closest to our holiday home are La Marquesa, La Finca, Villamartin, Las Ramblas and Campoamor.

The surrounding countryside has an abundance of orange and lemon groves. All in all, an ideal holiday destination for the whole family, at any time of the year.

Fly into Alicante or Murcia. Our apartment is just 35 minute from Alicante airport or Murcia airport.
Many budget airlines fly to these destinations including Ryanair, Easyjet, Flybe and Jet2. A good search site is skyscanner.

We can arrange airport transfers for you but if you would like a car to rent I would suggest carjet or economycar,
both are good sites.
