Fronting the Atlantic Ocean, Torre Vedres is bordered by the municipalities of Lourinhã (to the north), Alenquer (to the east), Sobral de Monte Agraço (to the southeast) and Mafra (to the south). A dispersed population, Torres Vedras includes 21 urban agglomerations, of which most have less than 200 inhabitants. Joaquim Agostinho (7 April 1942 - 10 May 1984), was a professional bicycle racer, Portuguese champion in six successive years, competed 13 times in the Tour de France (finishing all but once), won the Alpe d'Huez in 1979 (finished third twice). He died after colliding with a dog whilst leading in the Tour of the Algarve.
