The Costa Dorada/Tarragona region
Torredembarra is at the heart of the Costa Dorada region stretching along the Mediterranean coast of Spain from Barcelona southwards. To the south Tarragona( two stops on the train) is the largest city of the area. In the past ,it was one of the most important cities of the Roman Empire. Today you can still walk along its fortified wall, visit the amphitheatre and explore the underground areas of its Roman Circus. However Tarragona is also a thriving modern city with shopping areas, art galleries, museums and theatres.
Further south there is the natural park of the Ebro delta with its marine habitats and wild life,t he ancient cathedral City of Tortosa and the inland picturesque castle of Minivet.
Inland behind Torredembarra lies a vast rural area with wineries to visit and typically Spanish villages to explore as at Priorat. The working monastery of Poblet and nearby town of Mont Blanc with its medieval walls comprise a very worthwhile day out.
For excitement Port Aventura theme park (three stops on the train) and the aqua safari park to the north offer scope for the whole family. Go carting (at 3k) and golf (at 12k) are also available.
Torredembarra is a very Spanish small sea side resort full of life and character. Its main attraction is its magnificent beach, the largest in the region, backed by a lovely palm lined pedestrian promenade. At its southern end is a modern marina with cafes and restaurants. This also offers boat hire and fishing trips. Immediately in front of the apartment, the beach area is set out for beach sports such as volleyball. The wide sandy beach slopes gently to shallow water and is patrolled by life guards throughout the season making it very safe for young children. Further along towards the old fishing port area are more cafes and restaurants. Beyond, the yacht club is also the start point for water sports and sailing lessons. Further along the promenade gives way to a beach stretching into the distance and is backed by a nature reserve.
The old Town centre (at 10 minutes walk) is a maze of narrow streets with small shops, pavement cafes and a weekly market providing local character. However it also has all the necessary facilities to support visitors such as supermarkets.
