The Galicia region
The Costa Del Sol is pretty much an all round weather resort with more than 300 days of sunshine per year.
There are plenty of places of interest to visit or you can just relax and unwind. Malaga, Seville, Granada, Cordoba or the Sierra Nevada mountains in the winter for skiing are all within easy traveling distance by car or train.
Torre, A , Arealonga
One of the main attractions of Torremolinos are the the 9 kilometers of Blue Flag, really clean, safe, beaches that are fully stocked with beach bars, sunbeds, jets skis and other attractions. The closest beach to the apartment - Montemar - is about a 5 minute downhill walk away. In addition to sand Montemar also offers the opportunity of a palm tree shaded grassy area. Turn left when you reach the beach and you go towards Torremolinos (right to Benalmádena Marina - 3 mins) and in about 10 minutes you are in the La Carihuela area which is also the home of the famous 'chiringuitos' - beach café-bars which offer beach-side drinks and meals throughout the year. Walking further and after rounding 'the headland' the center of Torremolinos with its Calle San Miguel (and train station) can be reached by a narrow road to the left just after the twin buildings of the Meliá Costa del Sol Hotel.
On Sunday you will discover that this is the day when the Spanish families come out, many in their best Sunday clothes, going to church, to have a tapa, go for a coffee and a pastry or simply promenade along the Paso Martine and enjoying their Sunday.
The major festivities are:
Semana Santa (Holy Week) with its processions and crowds of onlookers is the week before Easter Sunday. There are processions through Torremolinos on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Our apartment is a good base for visiting the truly spectacular daily Semana Santa processions in nearby Málaga (the largest outside Seville and if you have never seen one of these processions you will rub your eyes in disbelief). There are trains every 20 mins from the El Pinillo station near the apartment which means avoiding the traffic-chaos in central Malaga during Semana Santa .
Dia del Pescaito (fried fish day) takes place on La Carihuela Beach on the first Thursday in June every year.
Festival of the Virgen del Carmen de La Carihuela is on July 16th every year. The climax to the Feria de La Carihuela this includes the procession of the image of the Virgen from the small church in La Carihuela through the streets and down to the seafront.
Festival of San Miguel Arcángel. Last week in September, culminating on St Michael's Day, September 29th. A very busy week-long festival of processions, parades and events. San Miguel is the patron saint of Torremolinos.
Benalmadena is split into three areas
Benalmadena Pueblo has a quiet pace of life with white washed houses and a lovely square which is ideal place to stop and have lunch. The church is worth a visit and outside there stunninig veiws down to the coast.
Arroyo De La Miel The town is a spanish working town and its a nice place to see and walk around and enjoy the street cafe scene , try the real spanish food here without the chips !!! Tivolo World Amusement Park is in Arroyo and this is where they hold the local Friday market. There is also a cable car that runs from here up the mountain and at the top the views are spectaculer a must for taking photographs
Benalmadena Costa - where our apartment is - is the coastal area where you will find the pretty, world famous, Puerto Marina with over 1000 moorings which has twice been awarded Best Marina in the World. Walk around the Marina and check out the yachts and the many shops, bars and restaurants (some good, some just expensive!) there is also a shipyard, sailing school, diving school, nautical school and a Sea Life Centre.
Go past the marina and you find the beaches of Benalmádena continue, keep walking and you will come to the 'Windmill' roundabout - where if you take the road up to Arroyo De La Miel within a 100 meters you will find on the left the Parque de la Paloma which features a large lake with a fountain and waterfall with ducks, swans and other water fowl and landscaped gardens with enclosures for a variety of animals and birds. Rabbits and other wildlife roam free. The large Cactus Garden displays cacti from all over the world.
If it's culture you are after, Castile Bil Bil is an amazing Arabic building with a series of fountains outside, which houses exhibitions and concerts hosted by the Town Hall. Benalmádena Auditorium was opened in 2003 with a recital by Jose Carerras. Many famous people have played here and the open air concerts are not to be missed. Casa de la Cultura has exhibitions and concerts throughout the year.
There is a thriving nightlife for younger people particularly around the Marina or choose to go to the 5* Torrequebrada Hotel which houses the resort's only casino and a spectacular cabaret show (to gain admission to the Casinos Games Rooms you need to be 18 or over and show either an original Passport or Driving License).
You're just 20 minutes away from Malaga, AKA Picasso's birthplace. There's a mix of up-to-date and historic here, with museums, churches and an old harbor cheek-by-jowl with shopping malls. Or, a 2-hour drive through the Andalusian mountains lands you at Granada, Seville or Ronda. They've got world-class architecture and galleries enough between them – but it's the famous stunning Alhambra Palace at Granada that should be the 'must see' location (but you need to book).
In both Torremolinous and Benalmádena there are plenty of opportunities to try out the local dishes and the best place to go is along the beach and visit a 'Chiringuito' (Beach Bar) where fresh fish dishes are served up with a wonderful chilled wine or a refreshing glass of sangria or the traditional Spanish tipple of Tinto Verano (red wine & bitter lemon or lemonade). The sardines are fantastic and you must try the pils pils (sizzling garlic prawns).
