The West Country / Devon region

“The Most Beautiful Bay In England” Twenty beaches, a stunning coastline, palms, parks and gardens, great nightlife and entertainment, fascinating history, famous attractions and superb accommodation make the English Riviera the perfect year-round destination.”

Torquay’s continental flair
Paignton’s Friendly family appeal
Brixham’s maritime tradition
The English Riviera enjoys one of the country’s most spectacular locations, set on and around the beautiful Torbay. The 22 miles of coastline contains almost infinite variety, with beaches, coves, ruined fortresses, golf courses, cliff walks, seafront gardens, fishing harbours and marinas.

Behind the façade of a popular coastal resort lies another world of country parks and villages. Situated in a secluded valley between Torquay and Paignton is the world-famous Cockington Country Park.

This also the birth place of Agatha Christie. She was born here in 1890 and lived for many years in the area. We invite you to trace her footsteps and discover just why this region was one of her many sources of inspiration.

Torquay area

Torquay is the largest of the three towns that make up Torbay, namely Paignton, Brixham and Torquay. This area of coastline is referred to as the "English Riviera". In the height of summer it is easy to see why. The outside cafe atmosphere of people sitting outdoors, the palm trees and warm weather and the beautiful blue sea and sandy beaches could create the illusion of being somewhere on the Mediterranean.

Many of the beaches in Torbay have won awards with Oddicombe, Meadfoot, Goodrington, Broadsands and Breakwater all holding the Blue Flag award for cleanliness and water quality. In total there are 24 beaches and coves along 22 miles of coast including Torre Abbey Sands, the beach voted the best in the UK for sandcastle building, as well as some amazing sites for rockpool rambling. Torquay is a bustling and vibrant resort that in the full summer season resembles something more of the South of France than a coastal resort in England. The outdoor seating of the cafes and restaurants and the well tended gardens and palm trees definitely have something to do with the overall effect.

The marina at Torquay is a beautiful sight and a hive of activity. The main beaches around Torquay are Ansteys Cove, Babbacombe Beach, Corbyn Head, Livermead Beach, Meadfoot Beach, Oddicombe Beach and Torre Abbey Sands which is Torquays largest and busiest beach.

The big upside of Torbay, and having three towns all within a short distance of each other, is the beautiful countryside, the fantastic beaches and the knowledge that even if it rains you can always find something to do. The English Riviera is the place to come for year-round entertainment with five theatres to choose from, perhaps the most well known being the Princess Theatre. Nearby Babbacombe also has a theatre with a year round programme of variety and there are also restaurants, cafes and attractions such as the Babbacombe Model Village and Bygones Victorian Village. There are sun-trapped beaches during the day which can be reached by Babbacombe Cliff Railway, taking you down to Oddicombe beach.

The neighbouring resort of Paignton also has its fair share of attractions with Paignton Zoo being one of the largest zoos in the country, with a reputation of being at the forefront of species conservation world-wide. You can travel in style through some of the area's most beautiful countryside on the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway. The Quaywest Waterpark offers a fun day out with a variety of rides and slides or you can just relax on Paignton Pier with traditional seaside fun for all the family.

You can cruise from Torquay round the Bay with either Evening cruises (some with barbecue and disco) or by the Sea-Train Adventurer (cruise, steam train ride and ferry return). Mackerel fishing and wildlife and coastal cruises are also available or sail to the pretty town of Darmouth along some of South Devon's most spectauclar coastline and cruise up the picturesque River Dart to the historic Dartmouth and Kingswear Castles and the magnificent Britannia Royal Naval College.

Cockington Village and Country Park offers an oasis of calm not far from the busy seafront and is a pretty village of thatched cottages where local cricket is played against the backdrop of Cockington Court manor house. The Craft Studios give live demonstrations with the opportunity to purchase crafts and paintings from the artists.

There are five golf courses accepting non-members in the vicinity together with pitch and put and crazy golf courses. Other sporting venues include hard and grass tennis courts, outdoor and indoor bowling and ten pin bowling. Sailing schools offer boat or yacht hire and there are also canoeing and sailing schools with jet ski training available. Speed boat rides and waterskiing are on offer at Goodrington Beach, Paignton and there are also sea fishing trips ranging from mackerel fishing to wreck and reef fishing. For the more adventurous, quad bikes can be hired at the Torbay Quad Centre and there is Go-Karting available at Churston in nearby Brixham.

There are several centres offering diving tuition, trips and equipment hire with Torbay long being a favourable site for the diving community due to its natural sheltered conditions and abundance of small coves. Popular underwater diving locations include Fairy Cove, by Paignton Harbour, Babbacombe Beach and Brixham Breakwater. The relative warmth of the Gulf Stream ensures a diverse population of corals, sponges, sea anenomes, fish and marine crustaceans.

During the Regatta season, Torbay is host to the Honda Powerboat Races and the Brixham Trawer Race featuring Brixham's own heritage sailing trawlers. with plenty of activities and festivities on water and land. Live music can be found at various venues with the Riviera Live! season bringing the waterfronts to life with music and street entertainment in Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. Other festivals include the English Riviera Cream Tea Festival, World Sand Sculpture Restival, Agatha Christie Festival and the International Comedy Film Festival.
