THE ENGLISH RIVIERA

The English Riviera offers so many exciting and interesting things to see and do you will be spoilt for choice! There is certainly something for everyone on the English Riviera and we are sure that once you've discovered this stunning location you'll return time after time. We wish you a most enjoyable visit.

Torbay is a large, semi-circular bay on the south coast of Devon, famous for its beautiful long sandy beaches, stunning views, red sandstone cliffs and crystal clear waters. To the west, Torbay is edged by steep hills creating a suntrap with a local micro-climate that is warmer than the rest of the country! Torbay is made up of the three distinctly different 19th century holiday resort towns of Paignton, Torquay and Brixham.

Paignton is a popular family friendly holiday resort located midway between Torquay and Brixham. Paignton is well known for its beautiful sandy beaches which are safe for bathing and ideal for paddling - making Paignton and the neighbouring Goodrington Sands the perfect holiday destinations for young families.

Paignton's bustling seafront features its magnificent pier which dates back to 1878. The pier offers visitors an array of attractions on both its open deck and inside, plus fabulous views of Torbay. There is also an 18th century harbour, that dries at low tide. The harbour area is a hive of activity, especially during the summer season. Nearby Goodrington, offers many family attractions including fabulous waterslides at Quaywest, a boating lake and beaches.

Torquay is well known for its nine sandy beaches, seven green hills, palm lined promenade and grand Victorian villas. It is the largest and most northerly of the Torbay and English Riviera resorts.

Since it first become popular in the 19th Century, Torquay has grown into a cosmopolitan town with many modern attractions. Torquay has a bustling harbourside and marina with an array of pavement cafes, stylish boutiques, restuarants and bars.

Brixham is situated at the Southern end of the English Riviera and is Britain's busiest fishing port. The town features a central harbour surrounded by narrow lanes that lead up into the surrounding hillside. The bustling harbour is home to a fabulous replica of Sir Francis Drake's ship, the Golden Hind. You can also find many pleasure boats sailing between Brixham and Torquay on the opposite side of the Bay.

Brixham also has a 500 berth yacht marina which is sheltered from the south-westerly winds by the cliffs of Berry Head, a National Nature Reserve with one of the largest guillemot colonies on England's south coast.

Torquay

A mile from Torquay harbour and in a stunning location at the bottom of a row of imposing cliffs is Meadfoot Beach. Grab a deckchair and enjoy the sound of the sea lapping against the shore, or wander along the split-level promenade lined with beach huts.

Above Meadfoot Beach is the iconic Osborne Hotel. This distinctive, crescent shaped building is an impressive sight, and inside visitors are treated to luxurious elegance and exceptional quality at affordable prices. For a real treat, why not have lunch on the terrace? You'll enjoy excellent food and magnificent views across the beach.

If keeping active is more your thing, then Meadfoot Beach is a popular spot for diving and fishing, while the South West Coastal Path lies at the top of the hillside. There are some fantastic walks on offer for people of all ages and abilities.

The Agatha Christie Mile

Close to Meadfoot Beach is the Agatha Christie Mile. Stretching along Torquay's seafront, you can follow in the footsteps of South Devon's most famous daughter. See where the Queen of Crime used to swim and dance, discover the hotel where she spent her first honeymoon, and learn more about her life and times in Torquay Museum.

With 3.3million visitors every year, the English Riviera is South Devon's beautiful bay and one of the most popular holiday destinations in the country. With over 20 spectacular beaches, clean and calm waters and lots of attractions, it's the perfect seaside destination

Access:

Sand/pebble beach. Easy Access from the road via a slope on to the promenade. There is a slipway to the beach 100 yards away. Radar Key toilets.

Dogs:

Banned during the summer season. There is a dog exercise area at the North end of beach (nearest the pay and display car park).
