The Puglia/Molise region
Puglia is the large region comprising the heel of Italy, running from the scenic Garganno peninsula in the north to the beautiful Salentina peninsula in the south, with a long sunny coastline linking them, studded with small, attractive resorts.
It abuts the mountainous region of Basilicata (with the 'troglodyte' town of Matera readily accessible), and Puglia is the home of the trulli, the strange conical houses particularly prominent around Alberobello, Locorotondo and Martina Franca.
It has good transport infrastructure with an extensive road and rail network.
Puglia is also Italy's orchard, and is the main producer of Italy's pasta, fish and olives.
It's a huge wine producing area too, and as a result Puglia is now one of the wealthiest parts of the south.
Lido Presepe by Torchiarolo is a tranquil development of mixed-style villas and properties built in the 50's/60's/70's, situated by the sea.
This stretch of coast is part of a long coastline running from just south of Brindisi down and round the Salentine peninsula. Ideal for long walks along the beach, past small communities like Lindinuso, Casalabate and Torre San Gennaro which is just a 5 minute stroll away along a promenade past an attractive beach backed by high dunes. There are beach facilities at Torre San Gennaro.
The coastline slightly farther to the south is studded with lovely small resorts like Torre dell'Orso, Otranto, Castro, Gallipoli, and is easily accessible by the quiet coastal road very close by.
Torchiarolo itself is an attractive small town, 2 1/2 miles away via quiet country roads flanked by olive groves, with good facilities including bank, post office and an excellent small restaurant on the square.
The attractive smaller cities of Lecce and Brindisi are both within a 20 minute drive most easily accessible via the autrostrada which is only about 4/5 miles away. Lecce is famous for its extensive and exhuberant golden baroque architecture, and Brindisi is impressively modern (albeit with a fine old town too), extremely well-maintained, prosperous and with many good restaurants along the quayside. Lecce, particularly, attracts many tourists. Evidence of this is that it has a tourist 'train' winding thru it's streets ! However, it remains a very peaceful and beautiful city.
Slightly further afield (within 1 hr) is the Trulli territory of Alberobello etc, and nearer still the famous 'white' town of Ostuni. Taranto, too, is not far away and is an interesting city with it's gothic old town situated on an island, and nearby is the ceramic 'capital' of Grottaglie. The beautiful small white towns dramatically sited within The Murge, such as Massafra, Mottola, Castellaneta and Oria are in this area too.
There are local markets in the surrounding small towns, the Sunday market in nearby Casalabate being particularly convenient (only 2 miles away), and a large market in Lecce.
There are 3 hyper-markets - IberCoop, Auchan & Carrefour - within a 15/20 minute drive.
The surrounding area is great for cycling - flat and quiet country roads - with extremely cheap bicycle hire available in Lecce and bikes easily transported by train to the nearby station at San Pietro.
There is also an excellent golf course at Acaya within a 30 minute drive along the quiet coastal road.
