About the home

Nature flourishes at Butlerstown - and the front door of the cottage opens on to a butterfly haggard, with a herb garden at the back of the cottage. These are both for private use by the guests of the cottage. There are pets to feed, local beaches, restaurants, pubs, golf courses, riding, sea fishing and trips to the Saltee Islands from Kilmore Quay (15 minute drive, and weather pemitting). There are also museums, gardens and other attractions within easy reach by car.

There are a number of local festivals, including the Wexford Opera Festival in October, an Traditional Irish Music Festival in Carrig-on-Bannow, Seafood Festival in Kilmore Quay, and generally good live music in Wexford town.

The spacious sitting room is perhaps the most remarkable of the rooms in Bagenal Harvey Cottage, with its oak floors, ceiling with wooden beams, leaded lights, open log fire, and traditional yet comfortable furniture. It is ideal for both larger and smaller groups - being large enough to house a large family, and yet cosy enough to enjoy by the fire.

Some guests have used it to play music in, paint, or just watch videos and relax. The kitchen- come-dining room has all the necessary kitchen accessories for cooking, but also keeps the traditional feel with a small Irish dresser and oval table to sit at. The bedrooms are very comfortable, and again lovingly furnished to suit the building.

Further details outdoors:
There is a small soccer pitch in front of the main house for general use, and beautiful walks/cycle rides. Many have remarked on the peace and beauty of the whole place - just driving up the wooded front avenue leads one into a different world! With a long front and back avenue there is a lot of safety for children, and they might enjoy joining in on the daily round of feeding the farm pets.

There are at least 6 beaches within easy driving distance, the closest being less than 10 minutes away, and there is a nearby lake with wonderful bird life.

The South East Ireland / County Wexford region

Bagenal Harvey cottage is in the sunniest corner of Ireland, and as the crow flies is just 1 mile from the sea. Set in the precincts of Butlerstown Castle, one of the best preserved 'Tower Houses' in Ireland, the place itself is rich in history; for it has been within the Boxwell family and their descendants now for at least 7 generations. Bagenal Harvey cottage is named after the lawyer who lived in neighbouring Bargy Castle, and became leader of the Wexford insurgents in the 1798 rebellion for a short time. It was he who asked for Butlerstown Castle to be bequeathed to his Boxwell cousins shortly before he was killed.
