Come and experience the REAL Portugal in this comfortable apartment in a lovely friendly Portuguese village. Enjoy delicious local speciality food and divine local wine in local family restaurants where the locals eat. Enjoy quiet roads and gorgeous scenery of vineyards, olive and citrus groves.

The apartment is based in a pretty village of whitewashed houses surrounded by beautiful scenery. Citrus and olive groves are round every corner, and many other fruits, such as fig, apples, peaches, cherries and nectarines are grown in local orchards. It is an area of gently undulating hills dotted with villages, many with lovingly tended flower gardens and vegetable patches. Local vineyards are the source of excellent red wine, and the area has been famous for wine growing since Roman times.

The apartment consists of a spacious double bedroom, living room with UK Freeview TV, a newly refurbished shower room and fully equipped kitchen with a traditional open fireplace. This has a new log burner installed making the apartment warm and cosy is the weather is cool. However it is often hot enough in December and January to sunbathe.

There are two café/bars and a small supermarket in the village, and there are several very good restaurants in local villages, serving delicious traditional Portuguese 3 course lunches with red wine for €7.50-€8.50 per person.

Amongst the many interesting things to visit in the area is the Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros. This is a range of hills where you can visit the fascinating Grutas de Mira de Aire, a wonderful cave where you follow a guide down into the caves for 180 metres and then thankfully be delivered back up into the sunshine by a lift. There is also a café/bar at the site and a water activity park.

The village is a short drive from a ring of interesting towns: Fátima to the North-West is a world-renowned town of religious pilgrimage; Ourém, a riverside town to the North where there is a flourishing weekly market; Tomar to the East, an elegant riverside town with an imposing Knight's Templar castle; Entroncamento, the nearest railway station and Torres Novas, another attractive town boasting a castle overlooking the river and good shopping areas.

The Silver Coast and the lovely Obidos Lagoon is to the West and the nearest coastal village is just a 40 minute drive away on good roads. The apartment is in a rural area but close to motorway links and a main railway station at Entroncamento provides good rail links to all parts of Portugal via the national railway. Trains are extremely efficient, clean, comfortable and very reasonably costed. Pensioners travel at 50% discount on showing identification.

We provide a complimentary supply of basic foodstuffs and a complimentary bottle of local red wine on arrival.

The Costa de Prata/Silver Coast/Central Portugal region

The region is really beautiful and very central for the whole Central area of Portugal. The local area is very quiet and rural, a place of orange and olive groves. Walking and driving are a pleasure in this area as there is not a lot of traffic and it is possible to amble along and stop to view places of interest quite easily. There are miles of vineyards which have flourished here since Roman times and this results, of course, in the delicious local red wines.

Within easy driving distance of the Silver Coast, the famous Castel do Bode lake, and a variety of fascinating towns. Close to TOMAR, a cosmopolitan town of pretty squares, a picturesque old town, lovely gardens with the River Nabao running through, topped by a truly stunning Knights Templar Castle. Also close is the town of FATIMA, a world centre of religious pilgrimage, OUREM where there is good shopping, a wonderful weekly market (Thursdays) and another castle.

The pretty town of CONSTANCIA is within easy reach. Here there is a lovely RIVER BEACH with picnic areas and cafes. This village is close to the world famous castle of Almoural. Close to Ourem there is another gorgeous RIVER BEACH at AGROAL with a swimming pool of fresh mountain waters, believed to relieve health conditions such as rheumatism and psoriasis. It is set in a river valley of great beauty.

TOMAR has the "Festival of the Trays", a festival where there is a parade of lovely girls carrying huge piles of florally decorated trays on their heads. This festival is only held every four years.

The town of FATIMA holds religious festivals, starting on 13th May and then on 13th of every month until September.

The town of TORRES NOVAS holds a Medieval Festival each year set in the gorgeous castle overlooking the town. There is a modern shopping mall here with a cinema showing films often in the English Language.

The nearby town of GOLEGA has two international HORSE FESTIVALS each year.

The Silver Coast is about an hour away by car. There are many small and large places on the coast where you can spend an enjoyable day by the sea, dining in local restaurants overlooking the beaches.

Tomar

Within short driving distance of the apartment are many places to walk and cycle safely. There are one of two really lovely lunchtime restaurants within a 10 minute drive. The village has two cafe/bars and a small supermarket within walking distance. The village is populated by Portuguese families and it is possible to experience real Portuguese life at its best here. People, tending their vegetables and orchards, will always smile and wish you "Bom dia" or "Boa Tarde" (Good Day or Good Evening) and ask you "Tudo Bem?" (Is all well?).

Set close to the Pargue Natural de Serras d'Aire e Candeeiros, where there is the famous Dinosaur Footprints Park where over 10,000 dinosaur footprints can be seen, and also the Grutas de Mira de Aire. This is a fabulous cave or grotto where you can follow a guide down deep into fascinating caves of stalactites and stalacmites. Deep in the cave are streams leading to a pool where fountains dance to music as a finale to a wonderful experience. Lifts are provided back up to the surface car parks.

Walking and cycling in the quiet local lanes is a pleasure and several river beaches are within a short 20 min drive.
