Wren Cottage is a warm and characterful modern home with everything you could want for a self catering holiday in Dorset. Nearby is the village pub, The Martyrs, and a lovely play area with seating and views. Athelhampton House is a 1.5 miles away and the County Town of Dorchester is 7.5 miles away, although Puddletown, 2.3 miles, offers a comprehensive village shop with butcher. The World Heritage Jurassic Coast lies 11.5 miles away and the property is close to Max Gate, the home of Thomas Hardy; Monkey World; The Tank Museum at Bovington and numerous other visitor attractions.

The pretty little village of Tolpuddle sits in the Piddle Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and this delightful detached cottage forms part of an historic village amongst picturesque thatched cottages. Tolpuddle is famous for The Martyrs, six farm labourers arrested in 1834 for trade union activity and sentenced to transportation to Australia. Thousands of people protested and, after three years, the men returned to England with free pardons and were treated as heroes.

The village boasts a lovely C12 church, the Tolpuddle Martyrs Museum, the Martyrs Inn, and a Village Hall.

You can enjoy delightful walks using the wealth of footpaths and bridleways nearby and can take a walk along the River Piddle to the C15 Athelhampton House and Gardens, with its Restaurant/tea room.

Further details outdoors

The cottage offers parking for 2 cars, beautifully planted front and rear gardens with garden furniture and BBQ.

The rear garden is enclosed and secure for your dogs who are welcome to stay at £15 per head per holiday. You can take several walks from the cottage - there is an outside tap for muddy boots and paws!

The shed offers space for storage of bicycles if you would rather cycle than walk in this beautiful part of West Dorset.

For children, it is a short walk to Orchard Meadow with play equipment, seating, wildlife habitat and space to relax.

The Dorset region

The West Country covers the counties of Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset, which is the most easterly. Dorset is probably most famous for its coastline - the World Heritage Jurassic Coast - 95 miles representing 185 million years of geology, home to Chesil Beach, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. Towns to visit include the County Town of Dorchester, Lyme Regis, Weymouth, Corfe Castle, Bridport, Shaftesbury and Sherborne while villages not to be missed include Cerne Abbas, Abbotsbury and Milton Abbas.

Ancient sites include Dorchester's Roman Town House, The Hardy Monument, St Catherine's Chapel, Kingston Russell Stone Circle, Jordan Hill Roman Temple, Maiden Castle, The Cerne Abbas Giant, and many more.

The climate in Dorset is mild, less wet, cool and moist than the South-West of England generally.

Dorset is great for lovers of wildlife as its habitats are among the richest for biodiversity in the country. It is also the only county in England without a Motorway!

The County Town of Dorchester offers a good range of shops and places to eat, as well as Museums, Sports facilities, a Market Place and Gardens. On the outskirts is Poundbury, famous internationally as a pioneering example of urban development using principles expounded by The Prince of Wales.

Tolpuddle achieved world renown when, in 1834, six labourers were tried and found guilty of starting a trade union to campaign against the harsh treatment they and thousands of others received from their employers. A museum in the village, just a few hundred yards from the cottage, tells their story.

What a nice surprise to read your review - thank you. We are so glad that you enjoyed the cottage and the area and it is so nice to hear that the shower room is a success! We thought it best to offer the choice of a leisurely bath or a super shower and we hope we have made the best use of the former 3rd bedroom! We are so lucky to have a good pub on the doorstep and many visitors comment on how good the service is there - we hope you made use of the Athelhampton membership card to get your discount. Mind you, there are so many great pubs in the vicinity - you'll have to come back again!!

Hello and thanks for your review. It is so nice to hear that you enjoyed the cottage, the local pub, the play area and the surroundings. We agree that the cottage is a great base to explore the area - perhaps you will come back and visit the bits you missed and re-visit your favourites!

"lovely cottage"

A lovely cottage very well situated for touring Dorset. The cottage (well, modern house really!) is very well equipped and comfortable. Kitchen/diner and lounge downstairs, and 2 bedrooms upstairs wit… More

Thanks for taking the time to post a review and for passing on your comments about the cottage, the local pub and the area generally.

We created the new shower room from the third bedroom and when planning it we thought that three toilets in a 2 bedroom house was perhaps unnecessary and decided, on balance, that guests might prefer to have a nice spacious room instead.

It is good to hear that you thought the cottage well equipped and I certainly try to keep up with the Tourist information Office with regard to what is available to do in the area!

"Wren Cottage - a lovely "home from home""

We enjoyed a lovely week staying in Wren Cottage, Tolpuddle. The cottage is very clean and well equipped with everything you need for pleasant stay. Beds and sofas really comfortable. The location… More

Thanks for taking the time to post your review and we are glad you enjoyed the cottage. As you say there is not a shop in Tolpuddle so you can either visit Dorchester (7.5 miles) for a choice of supermarkets) or Puddletown. This village is 2.5 miles away and has a very good shop with fresh bread and pastries daily, a good range of grocery products and a fresh butchery department.

Thanks for your review and lovely that you want to come back again so soon. Let's hope it is a little warmer for you next time although I am sure you will find plenty to do in the area in any case. We will have the new part of the garden planted out next weekend so it should be in full bloom when you return.

"A welcoming and well equipped cottage in a wonderful location"

The cottage was home from home, excetionally clean and well equipped with all appliances and broadband. Booking the cottage was easy and the owner made us (and our dog) feel most welcome.
The village of Tolpuddle is delightful with walks close to hand and within easy reach of the coast and downs and many National Trust properties and other attractions.
We would love to come again.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review of our new cottage. We are so glad you all enjoyed your holiday and you would be most welcome to return of course!

"Well equiped, very comfortable cottage in great location for Dorset highlights"

We have previously stayed at the owners other cottage in Piddlehinton (not far away) and were impressed with the level of attention to detail in that cottage. When the new venue became available we booked straight away, safe in the knowledge that the cottage would be to the same high standard as previously. We were not disappointed. Lovely quiet location with fabulous views from the bedroom window. Excellent location for day tripping to all that Dorset has to offer. A pub with good food within easy walking distance. Can't think of a single thing that has been omitted in the cottage which is well furnished with excellent equipment. We will certainly be coming back for more

A late response I'm afraid as I did not realise that there was a facility for me to reply. We are so glad that you enjoyed Wren Cottage as much as West Lane Cottage in Piddlehinton. It is hard for me to choose for people which one they should pick if both are available - the short answer is West Lane Cottage if you have dogs or like to walk from the door and Wren Cottage if you like to lie in of a morning (and enjoy the view) and particularly enjoy a very smart shower room!
