The Dorset region

Deverel Mill Cottages adjoin a

former water mill near Milborne St Andrew – a peaceful pretty village between

the picturesque market towns of Blandford Forum and Dorchester. Set in the very heart of Thomas Hardy country

with its rolling countryside and wonderful walks, there is much to see and do

including visiting Thomas Hardy’s cottage itself which the National Trust have

lovingly restored so you can imagine yourself back in time in his novel ‘Far

from the Madding Crowd’.

The lovely family home

of Athelhampton House is also close by with its beautiful gardens and timeless

feel. The county town of Dorchester has

much to offer with the ‘gem’ of the Dorset County Museum and pretty independent

shops. The Iron fort at Maiden Castle is

well worth a visit, but not for the feint hearted as the site is enormous, but

makes a great day out and wonderful historical walk as does the Roman

Amphitheatre at Maumbury Rings, both are just outside Dorchester.

If you are looking for

the beach, you are spoilt for choice with many stunning sandy beaches including

the world famous Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door within easy reach, or why not

try the train from Swanage to the coast?

Weymouth and Poole are both within an hour with their marinas and beach

sports an ideal way to spend a day. The

Jurassic Safari tours is an excellent way of seeing the coast and finding

fossils although fossil hunting on the beach at Charmouth still proves a real

draw for all ages.

The ruins of Corfe

Castle and the Giant of Cerne Abbas, the famous chalk figure also offer a good

day out.

For the children there

is Monkey World at Wareham, Sea Life Park at Weymouth and the Dolphin Centre at

Poole.

Close to the cottage, is the

neighbouring village of Milton Abbas, one of the most photographed villages in

the country and used in many TV sets for its picturesque unspoilt thatched

cottages.
