Further details outdoors

The Goriska region

Slovenia is a small but very beautiful country. It's the size of Wales with a population of only 2 million people. Around 60% of the country is covered in forest, with a third of the country being protected.

The Goriska region is in the west of Slovenia, close to Italy and Austria. The Julian Alps, part of the Triglav National Park, run through the Goriska region and offer fantastic skiing, walking and climbing opportunities. Triglav is Slovenia's highest mountain peak.

You will find that the region is very sunny in the summer months and can be blanketed in snow in the winter. It is beautiful in either season.

Tolmin

Podmelec is a small and peaceful village set on the side of the Baca valley above the Baca river, on the edge of the Triglav National Park and only 15 to 20 minutes drive away from the Soca river and valley. Both the Baca & the Soca are excellent for fishing.

Also available nearby are paragliding and rafting, with the immediate area offering numerous opportunities for walking and cycling, whilst ski areas are around an hours drive away.

Podmelec has a fantastic church. The next village has a bar/coffee shop whilst the towns of Tolmin and Most na Soci are just 10 minutes drive away. These towns offer a full range of facilities such as supermarkets, bars, restaurants, banks, museum, library and a medical centre.

The historic town of Kobarid is also nearby, where you can find an interesting museum and a range of excellent restaurants.

"Peaceful, Beautuful, Comfortable and Homely"

I took my wife to Slovenia to mark the anniversary of her 50th birthday. We read a review in a newspaper for the two houses and the surrounding area, it all sounded pretty good. Having never been to the country, neither of us quite expected such stunning unspoiled scenery, and that was just on the journey to the house. The directions were perfect. We stocked up at the local supermarket with provisions and took the winding roads from Tolmin to Podmelec. The house was totally as expected, a room on each floor, that's three, with a modern en-suite. Ground floor kitchen, upper ground floor sitting room and top floor bedroom. Everything works, everything is cared for, and everything is clean. The instructions for the house are simple and they work. There's a good stereo, fast broadband and cable TV. It has central heating and a good sized wood burner, even in the winter I'm sure this house is toasty and cosy. The photos on the website for the house depict it accurately, it is luxuriously functional and tastefully decorated with lovely touches in every room. We used the house as a base to explore the mountainous countryside, full to the brim with spectacular views, waterfalls and gorges. We hiked until we could hike no more. And when the weather turned we ate in fantastic restaurants and drank excellent local wine; always keen to return to our lovely but temporary home. In fact our whole experience of this new place we visited was greatly enhanced by this fantastic house. This is a house for two active people, if you have difficulties with stairs or are unsteady on your feet, stay away. I don't know if you would choose to stay here with small children, that depends on you and your children. You could ask, both Matthew and Martina were extremely helpful. Hat's off, at last an extremely comfortable well designed, affordable idyll, that really has the feel of your own house.

"Everything you could wish for"

Firstly I would like to thank Matthew for creating such a wonderful and unique escape that has everything you could possibly need.
The Carpenter's Workshop is stunning, warm and lovely place and wherever you look you can see the amount of thought and effort that has been put in. I can honestly say there was not a single thing that I would change.
Our stay in this charming barn was wonderful. The best accomodation ever stayed in…everything you could wish for…
Looking forward to our next stay here.
Thanks Martina and Matthew!

"Like something in a magazine"

My husband and I stayed eight nights at the carpenter's workshop and wished we could have stayed longer. The owner is a British interior designer/carpenter who has taken to overhauling rural structures in Slovenia. Although once a barn, the cabin now has a state-of-the art kitchen, hand-made cherry stairs, and refurbished but mostly original wooden floors and exposed beam ceilings. The entire place is impeccably decorated and beautifully lit. There's a cute balcony with a great view of the village below and the mountains across the valley. The living room is spacious and comfortable with a woodstove (with stacks of firewood and kindling at the ready), a nice tv, and a stereo system with an iPod connector. The bedroom is on the third floor and the bed is comfortable with quality linens, a duvet, and feather pillows. It's king size, which is hard to find in Europe outside of five star hotels. Staying at the barn felt more like staying in a friend's vacation home than it felt like a regular rental. Everything we needed was there and we weren't asked to pay extra for anything like beach towels. As for location, the village of podmelec near tolmin is fairly remote. You really have to want to get away, and you should be prepared to drive on ceaselessly winding and narrow roads. We took day trips to the Skocjan caves, Bled, Bohinj, Kobarid, and Vogel. Ljubljana could easily be a day trip if you aren't passing through there on another part of your trip already. The thing is with slovenia, if you want to hit all those areas without changing hotels every night, you'll have to do a lot of driving no matter where you stay, so staying in the tolmin area is no worse for that than staying in super-touristy bled or bohinj. The soca river runs right through tolmin and we canoed from Kobarid to tolmin. All that said, there were days when we were sick of driving and elected to hike from the backyard instead (you can do that here!). Also, just a five minute drive away you can hike to a wonderful waterfall. So there are things to do if you decide not to go far. Since no place is perfect, I will point out that, being a loft originally, the bedroom and bathroom have low, sloping ceilings. We are tall people and whacked our heads several times each. That said, the carpenter's cabin is otherwise without fault and we would go back in a heartbeat.

"leave the stress of day to day life behind"

The barn is a fantastic destination, high up in the hills looking out over the quiet villige of Podmelec. A short but intersting drive (15 mins) gets youto the town of Tolmin where you can get all your supplies. The whole property has been finnished to highest of standards and has a real homely feel, whether standing on the balcony with an early morning coffee or getting cozy on the generous sofa to watch a film.
