House | 4 bedrooms | sleeps 6

There is every kind of relaxing and more extreme sport and past time to enjoy in the region. Nearby attractions include Goriska Brda, a beautiful wine-growing region with fantastic independent wine producers who will welcome you in, sit you on their terrace overlooking beautiful views down to Trieste and the Mediterranean.
You will find majestic monasteries high on all the prominent hills around the area. As you descend into the flatlands from Goriska Brda, you can travel to beautiful and cosmopolitan towns on Slovenia's coast, such as Piran or Koper. The Mediterranean sea is clear and warm all summer for swimming.
Head inland and there is no end of great places to visit. This is the world famous Karst region, home to the farms producing air-dried ham and fine cheeses. Also near here you can find the world famous Lipizaner Horse centre, and the beautiful cave systems at Skocjan and Postojna.
Into Italy you will find many cosmopolitan towns such as Udine, Monfalcone, Cividale and Sistiana. These are great historic towns for an afternoon walk, open market visit, many great restaurants and bars for a drink.
The local area is charming. The Juliana Alps provide walking and hiking is utterly breathtaking. From short low walks along the emerald-green So?a River to high peaks with astounding views; the largest mountain in the region, Krn, will give you views over Austria, on a clear day, as far as the Matterhorn. Walk past the star observatory up to the small Chapel at Matajur and enjoy ethereal views over 3 countries. Down at the western end of the valley is the charming Nadiza River; this is much warmer than the Soca, and there are many secret pools and secluded places for a swim.
Nearby Kobarid boasts many excellent restaurants. At the high end, Hiša Franko has two Jeune Restauranteur d'Europe stars, and serves haute cuisine in an exquisite setting on the outskirts of the town. Kotlar is a great fish restaurant, and there is the charming and romantic campsite Lazar, which will serve beautiful grilled trout from the river in a romantic atmosphere.
All along the valley are access points to the lovely emerald-green So?a River. This and the joining Tolminka and Idrija rivers provide world-class trout fishing in stunning settings. Along the river there are many places to take part in great watersports such as canoeing, kayaking, canyoning, team rafting, and team building.
The So?a Valley is a world-class centre for cycling, both on and off road. Purpose built track provide excitement in nature with routes through forests and woods. The old road from Tolmin to Kobarid is one of the world's most beautiful roads, and makes a lovely afternoon lazy cycle into the sunset.
The mountain above the house, Kobala, provides the take off point for fantastic paragliding; the route along the valley can take you into the Dolomites. Also to the south, near to Nova Goriza, is a great smaller site with lovely views over Trieste when you get high up.
Tolmin has the fantastic castle of Koslov Rob standing above it: the circular walk around the hill up is really enjoyable. Finish with a lovely lunch or dinner at Stefan's restaurant at the foot of the hill. Take a walk through the pretty village of Zatolmin, buy some cheese from the dairy shop there, and make your way through the village to the stunning Tolmin Gorge (Tolminska Korita), cutting a crazy steep path up to the famous Dante's Cave, rumoured to be the home of Dante.

"Great scenery in a laid back, friendly country"
Couldn`t fault the locals for open-ness, and willingness to practise their English (and German !). Slovenia seems to be more tourist-friendly than ever. The local mountains are stunning. Appealing accommodation for .say, a group of singles with an appetite for the great outdoors and all the adventurous stuff.
Not so sure about it for a family holiday for people accustomed to high standards of cleaning, etc, although Sam and his caretaker are certainly very helpful regarding directions , places to eat and local information.
