About the home

Villa Gramigna is a charming two-story villa surrounded by the vegetation. It sleeps ten people. From Villa Gramigna you will enjoy a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside. Villa Gramigna is 400 square meters (4300 square feet). It features a private swimming pool, a private garden and winter heating.
You will be roughly 5 km (3.1 miles) from Todi, where you will find restaurants, the shops and public transportation. You will find the closest restaurant at 1 km (roughly 1100 yards) and a grocery store at 3.5 km (roughly 2.2 miles). You will reach Villa Gramigna from the parking area without having to climb any steps.

The Umbria region

Umbria, located in the middle of the Italian peninsula, above Latium (the region of Rome) and next to Tuscany, is the only region of Italy that does not have access to the Mediterranean. Despite this, it possesses, as you might have already heard, a "vocation for beauty".

The region is well known for its picturesque settings, the lightness and purity of the air, the presence of thermal and mineral water springs, the lakes and rivers and the spectacular waterfalls. Here life flows slowly, and people like to cling to their ancient traditions, keeping them alive through history.

Umbria is a region of mountains, hills and valleys. It is crossed by the Appenines mountains, which often slope down into gentle hills and allow for charming valleys crossed by rivers, such as the Tiber valley (the Tiber will eventually reach Rome) and the Nera valley, through which the Chiascio and Topino Rivera flow. In such a varied landscape expect to find the largest waterfall of Italy, Le Marmore, as well as lakes of volcanic origin, such as Lake Trasimeno and Lake Piediluco.

Umbria is also a region of small medieval town and villages, artistic gems which have maintained their original aspect and are at a short distance from one another. They all preserve noteworthy works of art, in the churches, in the art galleries and in the characteristic squares. The mystery of the Etruscan stones, the boldness of the Roman works, the pureness of the Christian architecture and the mildness of the Renaissance paintings are all to be found within the borders of Umbria. Those who have browsed a tourist guide will recognize the names of Perugia, Gubbio, Spoleto, Todi, Orvieto, Assisi, Spello, Trevi, Cascia, Norcia -- a few of the most notable towns of Umbria.

The Todi area

Todi rises on the top of a 400 meters hill that overlooks the valley of Tiber River, on the border with the ancient Etruscan territory. Its name derives indeed from this particular geographical position, Tutere that means “border”.

Todi, still surrounded by overshadowing medieval walls, was founded for want of the Etruscan city-state of Veii, whose inhabitants were there in 2707 BC, under the guide of Tùdero, in order to control the Tiber River, a very important transportation and commerce artery.

According to the legend, the Etruscans had already deposited some boulders in order to erect surrounding walls: they were having a rest, eating some meat on a rough red cloth. At some point an eagle came down, took the cloth from the table and went back to the top of the hill. This fact was interpreted as a “sign of gods”, and soon they built up high-rise walls on the highest top of the hill. The hill was named “Nidole”, which means nest (of the eagle).

If you love art, you’ll be surprised by the beauty of it gorgeous works of art. Think that just outside the medieval walls, you’ll admire one of the most striking works of Renaissance: the church of S. Maria della Consolazione, with an elegant pale-green dome. Moreover nearby the ruins of a medieval fortress, there is the ancient church dedicated to Saint Fortunato.

Many of these marvellous monuments have been left almost intact as witnesses of the Roman origins of Todi: Todi’s cathedral was indeed built on the ruins of an ancient Roman temple, and then it was dedicated to Saint Annunziata.

Standing on Piazza del Popolo, one of the most famous and lovely medieval Italian squares, you’ll be stunned by the views over the surrounding countryside.

Todi is also known for beeing the hometown of Jacopone da Todi , a famous Italian poet that wrote in Italian its poems, leaving behind the Latin era of the Italian literature.

Every year, in July, thousands of spectators flock to the “Todi Arte Festival”: this exhibition is famous as it involves several art genres: drama, opera house, various kind of music, visual arts and literary meetings.
