Enquire nowThe Umbria region
There are stunning views from the village of the famous Tiber River and gorge before it flows into Lago di Corbara (Lake Corbara) which is a 15 mins. drive away. For those who like to be near water, there are two other lakes in the area – Lago di Bolsena and Lago di Trasimeno. Acqualoreto is no more than a one hour drive to many of Umbria’s fabled hilltop towns: Todi (20 mins.), Orvieto (35 mins.), Perugia (45 mins.), Assisi (1 hr), Spoleto (1 hr), Montefalco (45 mins.). In addition, an important archaeological site, the Roman town of Carsulae is only 30 mins. away. There is a site with Etruscan tombs near Montecchio, a short drive from the village and an Etruscan necropolis at the base of the cliffs of Orvieto.
The Todi / Acqualoreto area
Acqualoreto has a bar and a small restaurant “La Cruccola” in the piazza. There is an excellent local pizzeria / restaurant (Rosa dei Venti) serving typical Umbrian dishes only 10 mins. drive away. There are no shops in the village but there is a small store in Morre (5 mins. drive) and a larger supermarket in Collelungo (7 mins. drive). A full array of stores and services are available in Todi and Orvieto.
Having a car is essential to enable you to explore this enchanting part of Italy.
Cultural - There are many beautiful medieval cities and towns to visit in the area, many of them walled and positioned on hilltops. They all boast wonderful medieval architecture and some of the churches, for example, the cathedrals in Orvieto and Assisi are World Heritage Sites. Most cities have museums in historic buildings where art collections and archaeological artefacts are displayed.
There are numerous festivals in the region which take place throughout the year with many originating during the Middle Ages. The people of Umbria proudly maintain the historical traditions of their ancestors with period costumes, dancing and food. There is an internationally acclaimed arts festival in Spoleto every summer and the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia (July) often brings in famous musicians and singers for the Festival. Another well-known event in Perugia is the International Chocolate Festival which takes place every October, not to be missed by any serious chocolate-lover. Montefalco hosts a big wine festival in mid/late September, featuring the famed local Sagrantino wine. Not to be forgotten is Aqualoreto's own festa week leading up to Ferragosto (August 15th which is Italy's most celebrated holiday) - this week consists of dinners and music in the piazza.
Last but not least is our own olive harvest which takes place in early November.
Outdoor and Sports - The countryside in Umbria offers many opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities such as walking and hiking. There are signposted routes in the area around Todi, the Tiber Nature Reserve and Lago di Corbara. Cycling and mountain biking are also very popular as the countryside provides for both simple and challenging cycling routes but all with beautiful views. Other activities include watersports on Lago di Corbara, Lago di Bolsena and Lago di Trasimeno.

We have enjoyed staying at "Villa Sogno" with our family in different seasons. The apartment is large, comfortable, well furnished, and fully equipped, with a pool that is easily accessible and large enough to swim lengths as opposed to being simply for paddling. It's a relaxing and enjoyable place to stay, with hosts that genuinely seem to care that you are comfortable and make every effort to anticipate your needs. The house location is great - right in the middle of Acqualoreto village with immediate access to the piazza which contains a small but superb restaurant and a friendly bar for coffee, croissants, or something stronger if preferred. Acqualoreto is the middle of the beautiful countryside of Umbria, above the Tiber River, and there are numerous places of cultural and historic interest nearby. The well-known towns of Orvieto, Todi, and Perugia are all less than 30 minutes away, and the beautiful cities of Florence and Siena are also easily accessible. Overal, definitely a 5-star recommendation! |

Located in small hilltop village midway between Todi and Orvieto, and convenient to the major renaissance centres, this is a seriously good, well hidden, find. The owners are English speakers, and really know their stuff, recommending places I've never heard of, even after 10+visits to central Italy (like Bagna Reggio - go there!). The house itself has stunning views, but know you're hiking up two flights of steps to get to the apartment, where the views are possibly even better. Nice swimming pool (it had just been opened in early June), and lovely area to sit outside and watch that endless Italian landscape. Everything in the apartment worked well, with a good shower to ease the bones after walking all day. Good local pizza joint (ask for directions), but recognise you'll need a car if you want to get around. |

The Accommodation was spacious, immaculate, very attractively laid out and decorated, and very comfortable. The surrounding countryside was lovely, and I was able to do day trips easily to Orvieto, Asissi, Todi and Perugia. The train station, about 25 minutes away in Orvieto, was handy for trips I took to Rome and Florence.I'm planning a return trip to celebrate a milestone birthday of my husband. The owners, my host and hostess, were really knowledgeable about Umbria specifically, and had lots of handy suggestions. Next time I will visit more of their suggested spots, which will be a lot of fun for us. |
