Home description

Maison Tillac is a beautifully renovated 19th century farm worker's cottage with attached barn in the medieval village of Tillac in Gascony in South West France. It can be rented as two separate gîtes ("Le Cottage" and "La Grange") or as a whole. Sightseeing, walking, cycling, golf, tennis, horse riding, fishing are all available in the area. Maison Tillac is ideal for a relaxing or active holiday in the beautiful Gascon countryside.

Situated in the Gers at the edge of a delightful 14th century village with facilities, Maison Tillac combines the best of the old with the best of the new. In the conversion the owners have endeavoured to retain as much of traditional design as possible, but have combined this with a level of comfort and range of facilities that will appeal to the discerning traveller.

The Midi-Pyrenees / Gers region

Gers lies at the heart of the pre-revolutionary region of Gascony. Although Gascony no longer exists in administrative terms, it still lives on in the emotions of the Gascon people and in the simple pleasures of life - the beautiful rolling countryside, the rural activities, the fine traditional food and drink - including the gourmet treats of foie gras and confit de canard. There are many good, inexpensive restaurants in the area serving these traditional delights as well as a selection serving a broader range of fine gourmet food. Madiran, St. Mont, Jurancon and Pacherenc wines, and, of course, fiery Armagnac, can all be tasted at the producing chateaux, domaines and chais.

Tillac area

Maison Tillac is situated one minute's walk from the local epicerie with the tastiest croissants, two from the best butcher in the area, three from the village bar and restaurant, and the tennis court and four minutes drive from an 18-hole golf course. Maison Tillac is ideal for a relaxing holiday in the beautiful Gascon countryside. Marciac, with its International Jazz Festival, Mirande for Country Music and Vic Fezensac for Salsa are all very close by.

Tillac has its Floralie, Brocante, Fete and classical music concerts. Add the rolling countryside of Gascony and its fields of smiling sunflowers, tiny villages, produce markets, quiet roads and lots of sunshine and you have the magic ingredients for the best of holidays.

The following list gives more details of the things to do and places to go within easy reach of Maison Tillac:

Golf Du Chateau de Pallanne - Now a well respected course of 18 holes par 72, featuring the already famous par 5 of 556 metres is only 3 kilometers away.

Marciac International Jazz Festival - First two weeks of August - World class jazz to suit every taste.

Mirande Festival of Country Music - Mid-July – Seventy concerts and events from morning to night.

Vic Fezensac Tempo Latino Festival - End of July – A celebration of Afro-Cuban and Latino music and culture.

Tillac Classical Music Concerts - Every summer – Concerts in the acoustically rich Tillac church.

Chateau de Lavardens - Annual Art Exhibition – Featuring paintings, sculptures, lithographs and illustrations by famous artists.

L'Abbaye de Flaran - not only a beautiful Cistercian Abbey but also an important cultural centre, art exhibition and concert venue.

Nogaro's Paul Armagnac Racing Circuit - where you can watch Formula 3 and other races and even learn how to race yourself.

Thermes D'Armagnac - the castle of Joan of Arc's battle companion with its "Museum of the Gascon Plume".

Larressingle - a beautifully preserved tiny fortified village (a "mini-Carcassonne").

Barran - with its twisted church spire.

L'Isle-de-Noé - in the arms of a river surrounding its 18th century chateau.

Bassoues' 43m high donjon museum - describing the histories of nearby villages.

Seviac's gallo-roman villa near to Montreal.

Fources - one of the prettiest of small villages, unusual for its circular shape.

Éauze - the heart of Armagnac country with an archaeological museum.

Riscle's Gascon museum.

Auch - with its imposing statue of d'Artagnan and its beautiful cathedral with superb choir stalls and stained glass.

Condom - gothic cloisters, Armagnac museum and cellars, a navigable river and - inevitably, the "Museum of the Condom".

Mirande - unique church and Beaux Arts museum.

Lectoure - thermal centres for "taking the cure".

Fleurance - fine market square and church with superb stained glass.

Pyrenees - Winter sports and walking/climbing/potholing at other times.

Pic-du-Midi - Astronomical observatory and museum - fabulous views.

In addition it is only two hours to Biarritz and the Atlantic coast with its hundreds of miles of fine sandy beaches (with, in certain seasons the best surfing in Europe) and it is only 1½ hours through the Pyrenees into Spain.

A door leads to the illuminated rear terrace and pool.

Through a double door there is a ground floor double bedroom with exposed stone wall, a 140cm bed, bedside tables, en-suite with tiled walk-in shower, toilet, washbasin, mirror, electric point, etc., and a separate recess for hanging and storing clothes. There is a separate front entrance to this room so it can be let out on its own or, out of season, with the living/dining/kitchen area as a ground floor apartment for two people. It has its own mini-fridge, electric kettle and coffee-maker for two. A TV can be installed. A round table and 2 chairs can be used in the room or outside on the front porch.

From the main living area, a flight of wooden stairs leads to a corridor with exposed stone walls giving access to 3 bedrooms, all of which have parquet flooring, original vaulted ceilings and columbage.

The first bedroom is a twin-bedded room with 2 beds of 80cms each, a clothes recess, chair, bedside tables and lights, en-suite with tiled walk-in shower, toilet, washbasin, mirror, electric point, etc. It would be possible to add a third bed.

The third bedroom, the largest, has a 170cm double bed that can be separated into twin beds of 90cm and 80cm. It has a large walk-in recess for clothes and luggage, chair and bedside tables and lights. There is space for an additional single bed or a cot. The tiled en-suite bathroom has a bath with a shower attachment, toilet, washbasin, mirror, electric point, etc.
