Tignes is made up of five villages: Brevieres, Boisses, Lavachet, Le Lac and Val Claret. Val Claret is the highest of all the villages.
Tignes was a farming communities that also profited through smuggling from nearby Italy.
In 1952 a dam was built in Tignes and this meant that the village would be completely buried beneath the newly created Lac Du Chevril.
It has been rumoured that locals tried for years to disrupt building works using resistance-style tactics.
The dam was supposed to provide 10% of France's electricity. Ironically however, France soon joined the nuclear age and the power was never used.
Interestingly, the lake is drained every 10 years, and you can walk among the remains of the drowned village. The lake was last drained in the spring of 2000.
The lake is now used to charge up a storage battery as a backup if ever the ski resort should suffer a power cut.
The dam has become a landmark for Tignes and now has a huge figure of Hercules painted on its walls, known as the Giant of Tignes.
Government contributions meant that Tignes could re-invent itself as a ski resort. In April 1967, the developer Pierre Schnebelen and the Savoie Department were able to use funds originally intended for a 55,000 m2 development at Lavachet, to develop fully the resort at Tignes.
The building of Residence Bollin was actually home to Pierre Schnebelen, he occupied the top floor penthouse. Obviously taking the best view for himself!!
The close proximity with Val d'Isere, has enabled these two snow sure world-renowned resorts to team together creating the Espace-Killy skiing range named after Jean-Claude Killy, the famous French skier, who won three gold medals in the 1968 Olympics in Grenoble.
You can ski over 300km of terrain, serviced by 96 lifts with a carrying capacity of 149,425 persons an hour, from the villages of Le Fornet and Val d'Isere to Le Daille and Tignes.
The Espace-Killy has a history of hosting the most prestigious events. The 1992 Albertville Olympics saw a number of events being held in the Espace-Killy range.
Tignes hosted the freestyle skiing with Val d'Isere hosting the prestigious Giant Slalom, Super G and downhill events.
Tignes continually strives to improve itself. In 2006, the new leisure center Le Lagon in Tignes Le Lac opened. It's a short walk or free bus ride from Val Claret.

| Ferry: | Calais: 900 km |
By Car:
The quickest ferry channel crossing is by the Folkestone-Calais route. The crossing takes approximately 35 minutes and is very quick and efficient.
For more information, operators, timetables and prices see:
www.ferries.com
Please bear in mind that during the winter months services can be affected by the weather and a lengthy delay before you even get on the ferry is not the best start to your holiday.
Eurotunnel is my preferred method if going by car, it is much more reliable and flexible, however during school holidays can be quite chaotic especially on the French side coming home. For more information and fares go to:
www.eurotunnel.com
Most of the motorways in France are toll roads and the return journey between Calais and the apartment costs approximately 87.00 Euros.
From Calais take the A26 towards Arras, St Quentin & Reims. At Chalons sur Mame, head towards Troyes and Langres then Dijon. From Dijon head towards Macon and just before Lyon take the A46 towards Chambery. This takes you round the East side of Lyon and on to the motorway into the Alps. From Chambery head to Albertville, then Moutiers, Bourg-Saint-Maurice and Tignes.
From Calais, the journey is approximately 600 miles and takes roughly 9 - 10 hours. Watch out for the radar speed traps - you have to pay cash for any on the spot fines and the French Police do not take credit cards!! Remember the upper speed limit is 130 kmh / 80mph on French Motorways.

Excellent appartment, was exactly as described, clean, bright, recently decorated, modern and fresh. Loved the large entrance hall with heated boot racks. Ski in and ski out was great to... more |

Had a week in Residence Bollin 21 and it's location is second to none - ski in, ski out, no stairs or lift to negotiate, ski locker in entrance and a secure apartment. The apartment itself could be improved with the addition of a few items, namely, better bedside lighting in both rooms & some means of sweeping up the numerous crumbs from the french bread. The addition of the boot heaters in the hallway was much appreciated. We too had no satellite TV during the week we were there, so I would strongly suggest taking along a few DVD's to watch if you just want to chill out in the evening. |
