The Caithness and Sutherland region

Welcome to Scotland's Highlands, a magical land of amazing natural beauty, where the scenery is breathtaking, the flora and fauna captivating, and the attractions and activities exciting and appealing.

From the mesmerising glow of a typical Highland sunset to the raw beauty of a west coast mountain range, and in all the vastness around and between, can be found wonderful, exhilarating adventures or peaceful, energy-restoring experiences - whichever your wish, or need.

With its abundance of fertile land, clear, clean water and fresh air, this part of Scotland boasts a natural gourmet larder. Its seafood and fish - lobster, shellfish, wild salmon, trout plus locally produced whiskey - are renowned the world over.

Thanks to an ever-expanding air service and a comprehensive rail and ferry network, the area can be travelled in comfort, and drivers will often find that they have many of the roads to themselves - apart from the odd sheep.

Few places in the world offer such a wealth and diversity of natural beauty, activities and attractions, but this is one of them. (Scottish Highland Explorer)

Thurso

Caithness is an area of great beauty and contrasts with acres of wilderness, mountains, dramatic cliffs and deserted beaches, but also boasts 2 bustling towns, Thurso and Wick, providing all the facilities a visitor may need. Caithness is the ideal base for walking, cycling, surfing, birdwatching, botany, visiting sites of historical interest, fishing, golfing or for just relaxing and escaping the stresses and strains of modern day living.

Ocean View Holiday Cottage is perfectly positioned to take advantage of all that Caithness has to offer including :-

Dunnet Head (5 min. drive, or a pleasant 3 mile walk or cycle) The most northerly point on mainland Britain with its magnificent viewpoint, cliffs with puffins, Stevenson lighthouse, 360 degree views of Orkney Isles and mountains to the west and south.Dunnet Head also has a number of lochs for fishing.

John O'Groats (12 miles) Well worth a visit. Wildlife boat trips, and day trips to Orkney available during summer months. Various craft shops, some selling local produce. Duncansby Head is also nearby with its lighthouse, magnificent cliffs and amazing sea stacks.

Castle of Mey (6 miles) The late Queen Mother's favourite holiday home. Castle and gardens plus restaurant are open to the public in summer season. Animal visitor centre also popular with the youngsters.

Mary Ann's Cottage (2miles) In Dunnet village. An excellent example of a traditional croft house filled with typical furniture, box beds, open range and crofting implements etc.

Dunnet forest is a great place to visit particularly with children with its maize of intertwining paths and attractions for children. The Seadrift centre at Dunnet beach is a wildlife ranger run visitor centre with lots of fascinating information and displays about local wildlife and environment

Caithness is ideal for walkers of all levels with acres of deserted moorland waiting to be discovered, but also a number of mountains such as Morven and Scaraben which are easily accessible but challenging.

Caithness has world class surfing facilities with excellent surf at Thurso East, Brimms Ness and Dunnet Bay, all within easy travelling distance of Ocean View.

There are a number of excellent golf courses nearby, Thurso, Reay, Reiss.

Trips to Orkney are available by car and passenger ferries which run all year round from Gills and from Scrabster . Passenger only daytrips run from John O'Groats in the Summer months

These are just some of the local attractions. There are many more and many places yet to be discovered!!!!!
