The Devon region
Stancombe itself has many facilities on site to suit all ages including an indoor heated pool measuring 6 metres wide by 13 metres long, newly refurbished to include a sauna and new changing rooms; tennis court; snooker room with a full sized snooker table; games room incorporating table tennis and billiards and outside play area. Most of the leisure facilities are open for use 24 hours every day.
Stancombe is less than 10 minutes from the charming estuary town of Kingsbridge and well located for the many unspoilt beaches along the South Devon National Trust coastline. The nearest shop/bakery is located five minutes away in the village of Frogmore.
Coast/Beach : There is an awful lot to choose from in the South Hams area and it is worth exploring to find your own preference, depending on whether you prefer sands or shingle, small coves or large beaches, or are prepared to walk. There is Thurlestone Sands, with its wide sandy beach is one of several locally owned by the National Trust and attracts both families and water sports enthusiasts. The wide sandy beach is backed by a nature reserve where rare and exciting birds have been spotted. Or Bantham (great for surfing, sandy - 20 mins), Beesands (shingle and large - 15 mins), huge stretch from Torcross along Slapton Leys (shingle - 10 mins), Hope Cove (small, sandy - 15 mins) and Blackpool Sands (beautiful clean water sports - 20 mins) driving.
Golf: Thurlestone Golf Club is a 20 minute drive away. It is one of the most beautiful courses in the South West of England, set in about 50 spectacular acres on the cliff top with beautiful sea views. The course is a mix of links and cliff-top terrain with the latter providing breath-taking views of the legendary Thurlestone Rock to the East and the beautiful Avon Estuary and Burgh Island to the West. It provides ideal holiday golf - not too severe with quite generous fairways.
Closeby is the quaint harbour of Hope Cove and the vibrant town of Salcombe, with its yachting harbour is a short drive away. Kingsbridge, at the head of the estuary, has a wide range of shops and places to eat. Further afield, Totnes and Dartmouth are great towns to visit. Dartmoor lies to the north, and the towns of Plymouth, Exeter and Torquay (the 'English Riviera') are an easy drive away.
Food, glorious food! As far as eating out, there are lots to choose from. The Sloop at Bantham (good pub food in convivial surroundings), The Cricket Inn at Beesands (excellent food, especially fish) and the Village Inn at Thurlestone (cosy). The Crabshell at Kingsbridge on a Summer evening is a great place to eat outside overlooking the estuary – excellent scallops and good fish and chips! The little village of Southpool only a couple of miles from Frogmore is an archetypal Devon village and with a creekside setting – good pub called the Millbrook, too. For a real splurge there is the Tower at Slapton – well worth it! Or if you really want to treat yourself there is the Buckland Tout-Saints Hotel, a delightful manor house hotel about 8 minutes drive from Stancombe where you can have the set dinner or just have a cream tea on the terrace and play croquet on the lawn! Just up the road from Stancombe at East Allington is the Fortescue Arms – a lovely cosy village pub catering well for families as well as delicious a la carte meals.
