A mile from Throwleigh, in the tiny hamlet of East Ash, a beautifully refurbished linhay in a small courtyard of converted farm buildings. To the rear, a granite-walled, enclosed garden with patio and table/chairs (the artist neighbour has access through the garden to a small studio). In total, about 5 acres of land to wander: track to stream, meadow to pond (your risk), a wonderful place to count dragonflies!

Inside, carefully furnished with lovely fabrics, colours and original paintings: a very restful retreat. Door from shared courtyard to boot room/lobby with small cloakroom (loo, washing machine), ideal for wet coats and dogs. Large open-plan living/dining/kitchen (slimline dishwasher, microwave) with oak floor (rugs), TV/DVD and French windows and steps to the lovely garden. From the kitchen, stairs (bottom stairgate) up to two bedrooms – a very pretty and spacious double with beams and rural views from Velux windows, and a small twin (truckle) with limited clothes-hanging space; exceptionally smart bathroom (suite plus hand-shower and separate shower). Best for maximum of 3. Pub, 1½ miles. A very charming and accessible base; perfect for walkers.

The Devon region

Dartmoor: "the last great wilderness in Southern England". Great rock-tors top many of its often heather-covered hills. Marvellous for walking, riding, tor-climbing, picnicking, kite-flying, pony-trekking and, if you're at all energetic, not seeing other people. Just off its edge, amid woods, valleys and farmed hills, are many pretty villages (sometimes thatched) and very lively small towns. All is protected from caravans, tents and most ugliness by being in the Dartmoor National Park.

The half of the moor north of the B3212 is the highest and wildest; no villages within it, almost no cultivation. The southern half has the most spectacular tors, best wooded river valleys, a few villages (like Widecombe, Buckland) in green-field 'oases'. The moor's eastern edge is the softest, most wooded, most popular: Chagford, Moretonhampstead, Lustleigh and Bovey Tracey are among its best villages, and the river Teign is an exceptionally beautiful river valley. The Dart(s) – two of them rise in the moor's middle and join at Dartmeet – is/are equally beautiful all the way to the sea at Dartmouth. Very lovely, too, are the valleys of the rivers Avon, Erme, Walkham and Tavy; Tavy Cleave, on the latter, is the western moor's most dramatic place. The quality of a pub can change so quickly we hesitate to recommend, but there are plenty of them; and of places to ride or pony-trek.

Throwleigh

Throwleigh: little village (modest PO/shop, pretty church) in lanes below Dartmoor's edge, on the lovely Mariners' Way walk. ½ mile to pub, and to open moor; 2 to service station (shop); 5 to Chagford and Okehampton (golf, tennis, indoor pool, leisure centre, cinema). Exeter, 18. Fishing and riding not far.
