The Poitou-Charentes/Vendee region

The property is located just 20 kms south of Saumur and the River Loire. Within easy driving distance there are many fabulous Chateaux and places of interest - especially of historical interest. There are many Troglodyte Caves to explore and the Zoo nearby is spectacular. The rivers of the Loire and the Thouet both have cycle-ways along their banks to take you away from the hustle of everyday life. Some two hours drive away is the sea and beaches at La Rochelle -- about an hours drive away there are two internationally recognised theme parks = Futuroscope at Poitiers and Puydu Fou, both exciting days out for all the family.

The whole region is rural with large or tiny villages nestling in wonderful countryside - a delight to see and enjoy.

In June (21) all the towns and villages hold their annual "Fete de Musique". On Bastille Day (The French National Day 14 July) most places hold a ceremony to include the community. Saumur holds a military ceremony as the French Cavalry have their HQ and National Equestrian Centre there. During the Summer on most Sunday's villages around take turns to hold "Boot Fairs" (Vide Greniers).

Close by there are many places of interest (historical / recreational / artistic / etc) =

There are many Chateaux to visit many tracing their history back to the days when France and England had the same Kings and Queens. For example : the Abbey at Fontevraud is the burial place of Henry 11 and his wife Queen Eleanor and his son King Richard 1 (The Lion Heart) Chateaux of note include Saumur (which holds daily performances to entertain all members of the family. At night there is a spectacular light show "Le Tresor des Ducs D'Anjou"), Breze, Oiron, Montreuil-Bellay, to name only a few.

At Doue la Fontaine (some 15 minutes in the car) is the wonderful "Bioparc" (Zoo) - a great day out for all. Also in the area around are Troglodyte Caves -- all different and interesting to explore.

We are in France - SO the area boasts some very drinkable wines -- there are many vineyards to visits + Caves in Saumur and in some of the towns around. Learn about the making of wine or just taste it - even buy some to take home.

The area is rich with interesting places and things to do - for a holiday or a passing dalliance.
