Suffolk has many Towns and Villages worth visiting. Nearby ones of note within driving distance include Snape (with world famous concert hall),Dunwich, Orford (with Castle and Smokehouses), Southwold (with pier) and Framlingham (with Castle). The RSPB reserve of Minsmere is a short drive away.

The nearest town to Thorpeness is Leiston which is about 2 miles away - Here you will find a good range of shops selling a wide range of produce, there is also a Cinema, Bank, Post Office, a very good Fish & Chip shop, Supermarket and Butchers. In the other direction is the town of Aldeburgh (also about 2 miles away) which has shops and restaurants.

Thorpeness has a large shallow Meare (where rowing boats, punts and canoes can be hired) which was created in the early 1900s by Glencairn Ogilvie who owned and built Thorpeness. There is also the Thorpeness Golf Course and Country Club with Tennis Courts, Beach, Shop, Dolphin Inn Pub (which of course serves the local Adnams Ales!) and Cafe by the Meare. There are many places of interest to visit nearby including RSPB Minsmere and Aldeburgh Marshes if you like watching for wildlife.

If you want to eat out you can walk round to The Dolphin Inn which serves very good food. Opposite the cottage is a new restaurant/cafe called 'The Mess' which is open during the day and some evenings (as this is quite new I am not sure about opening hours at the moment)

In Leiston there is a Supermarket, Cinema, Library, Bank, Sports Hall and the Long Shop Museum on the site of the former Garrett Engineering Works.

"cosy cottage"

This cottage is very cosy-the lounge opens straight onto the garden but despite this it iscosy and warm. Plenty of hot water always available and an easy to use heating system. Everything we needed wa… More

Glad you had a good time and thank you for nice review, pleased to know that the new boiler and heating controls are working as they should!

"Brilliant place to stay"

The property was of a 1st class standard, which we could not fault. It was one of the very best properties that we have stayed in in the UK.

This cottage suited us perfectly. Very nicely decorated, in a superb location. I would book it again.

"Perfect holiday in a beautiful cottage.... excellent facilities and wonderful location."

Coxwains cottage was a perfect base to explore the suffolk coast being tucked away on a quiet road, just a couple of minutes walk to the beach and boating lake. The cottage has everything you could possibly need for a comfortable relaxing holiday. We especially enjoyed being able to sit outside in the charming covered patio area soaking up the summer sun. We hope to return very soon.

"Snug modernised cottage in the centre of the village by the sea"

Coxswains Cottage is in a lovely spot in the centre of Thorpeness within walking distance of the sea, meare & pub etc.
The owners are obliging and maintain the cottage to a high standard. There is everything there to make a stay comfortable and easy to manage; like proper cutlery and a range of glasses quality linen etc.
The layout with 2 double bedrooms each with a full size on-suite and own staircase works particularly well and although the garden is small it's very pleasant to sit there in the early evening in the sunshine watching the world go by.
Parking is a problem, especially at the weekend, but that is the same in all desirable parts of this unusual and fascinating village.
It is walking distance from the golf club and a very pleasant walk along the see shore brings you to Aldeburgh.
We have stayed there 3 times and are about to book again for next year!!

"Gorgeous cottage, beautifully presented and perfectly located"

Absolutely lovely little cottage, with all you need, beautifully presented, stylish, spotless and welcoming. Fabulous location, just over the road from the beach and right next to the Mere, great walks, a nice stroll along the beach into Aldeburgh - a really lovely place to relax and unwind. Highly recommended!

"cosy well-equipped cottage a stone's throw from the sea"

Comfortable cottage, with well-equipped kitchen, plenty of books and home comforts. Loved the two bedrooms/bathrooms with their own separate staircases - very useful for two couples or two individuals. Plenty of room in the dining-kitchen, although living room was tiny - but very cosy! Bed linen was good quality and everything was spotless.

Thorpeness is a fascinating place but well-placed to explore the Suffolk coast, especially Aldeburgh which is a couple of miles away along a beachside path. Orford Ness and Southwold are also worth a visit.

Since this guest visited the rear courtyard has been improved with the addition of glazed roof, new granite paving and new furniture - the front garden is still small but will soon have improved screening to improve privacy.

"A very British seaside holiday"

This is a small but very well appointed holiday cottage. Steep stairs which my elderly mother had trouble with (no handrails?), but worth the climb to excellent, comfy beds and spacious bathrooms. Kitchen has all the equipment you could need for a gourmet dinner.
We ordered newspapers from the local shop and collected croissants for breakfast.
NO internet or satellite TV, but hey you're on holiday!
SIt in the sunny front garden or walk a few paces to the beach.
Thorpeness must be unique as a place - fascinating to wander around. Walk to Aldeburgh or cycle around

"Relaxing and welcoming"

We booked here for a weekend in March as we wanted a place near the beach for walks with our new dog. We asked Philip if we could bring him and he agreed that a small we behaved dog would be welcome. … More
