The Dumfries and Galloway region

Just over the English border lies Dumfries and Galloway in the west and the Scottish Borders in the east. These two very distinctive areas have retained a totally rural and tranquil atmosphere where visitors can enjoy a wonderful holiday away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In fact here you'll find miles of beautiful untouched countryside and striking coastlines; a great place for outdoors holidays, fishing, walking, sailing and cycling. Coastal and beach strolls and small fishing harbours waiting to be explored. The capital city of Scotland, Edinburgh, is probably on most people's ‘must visit' list and with good reason. The city is renowned for its magnificent architecture and historical buildings, which include Edinburgh Castle and numerous museums and galleries. Today Edinburgh is a thriving modern city with world class shops and restaurants and lots of traditional atmospheric pubs.

Thornhill

Lovers of fine architecture must visit the sublime Drumlanrig Castle. The latter is the ancestral home of the Dukes of Buccleuch and Queensberry and has been since the first building works took place in 1691. Visitors are free to follow the way-marked trails through the estate and to enjoy some of the local produce on offer in the highly regarded tea room. Another majestic building well worth a visit is Dumfries House, commonly regarded as being in the top five stately homes in the UK. The region is developing a well deserved reputation as one of the most ‘walker friendly' regions in Scotland and all those who like to get out in the fresh air must sample the beautiful but daunting Southern Upland Way, the country's longest, long distance trail, which passes close to Holmhill on its winding coast to coast route. Mountain bikers will feel right at home in Dumfries and Galloway and can take their pick from numerous venues such as the routes available at Ae Forest and Drumlanrig. The Burns Heritage Trail is a must for fans of great literature and includes the actual place of his birth.
