The Rhone / French Alps / Haute-Savoie region
The French Alps is an ideal holiday location, offering plenty of snow for winter sports holidays and long sunny days throughout the summer for lakeside swimming, mountain biking and hiking. The clean, fresh mountain air is a perfect antidote to the smog of city living. The Lake Geneva locality offers an array of activities and sites of interest, from the medieval towns of Yvoire and Gruyere to the Olympic museum in Lausanne.
Thollon les Memises area
Thollon les Memises is a quiet and really friendly mountain village, with family run restaurants and bars. It has a very helpful tourist information office who can arrange ski lessons (private or with the ski school), kindergarten places, and has walking route maps and information on all events. The local skiing is ideal for young families and beginners with 16 lifts, including a new run leading directly to the village. Ski hire and lockers are available in the village. For the more adventurous skier, Bernex, Porte de Soleil (Chatel) and Verbier are all within easy reach for day trips. Other local activies include mountain biking (bikes can be hired locally), hiking, climbing, river rafting, paragliding. Down on the lakeside, Geneva, Montreaux and Lausanne are all reachable within the hour, by car or boat. The spa town of Evian (10 minute drive) has numerous beaches, an outdoor swimming complex, play areas, golf, boating, outdoor markets and, of course, the thermal spa and casino. It also has some excellent restaurants. Also close by, on the Swiss Lakeside, is the ‘Vapeur Park’, (model railway) large Aquaparc, zoo and Labyrinth park to name but a few. There really is so much to do in the surrounding area, yet it is also very easy to sit back and do little but enjoy the views, with local cheese and wine!
How to get there
There are many cheap airlines flying into Geneva from UK and other European destinations, chief amongst these are Easyjet and BA. Hirecars from the usual companies can be obtained cheaply through the usual holiday websites; Easycar, National and Europcar spring to mind, and can be cheaply booked as part of an air/hirecar package over the internet. The cheapest hire cars are usually available from the FRENCH-SIDE of Geneva Airport.
The TGV does stop in Evian, Thollon is then a 10-15 min taxi or bus ride away.

Further details indoors: There is a large mezzanine area accessed by a removable step ladder, which can be an ideal extra sleep space (take air beds) or play space for children (accessed with care).
As we are a family with a young child (8 months) you'll find everything there you could need if you are taking an infant. There is a high chair and travel cot (with sheet), and even a Silver Cross Pop pushchair for your use. In the kitchen is a moulin to puree baby food, as well as small bowls and spoons to cut down on all the baggage young children need.
For older children (and grown ups too) there are plenty of games - board games, a mini skate board, boules etc. We also have quite a large selection of DVDs which you are welcome to watch, or you can take your own.
Further details outdoors: In winter the chalet can be accessed from downstairs - only about 5 steps up from the car parking spaces which makes it more convenient. There is also an entrance around the back which involves another flight of stairs, so easier in summer.

Guestbook for Chalet No. 6, Lajoux
"My Husband and I stayed in Thollon for the first time in March 2006, and had an absolutely fantastic holiday.
We found the chalet easily within 90 minutes after hiring a car at Geneva Airport, and we were both surprised at how large it was. It is very comfortably furnished, and has a real home from home feel. There is plenty of room for a family or group of people to stay there, the kitchen is really well equipped to make hearty meals after a day on the slopes!
Although we didn't take children, I would have no hesitation as there is plenty of room for them to play leaving a relaxation area for the adults to enjoy a nice bottle of local wine - or two!
Within easy reach by car of the chalet is a small well stocked supermarket, and as everywhere in the village the staff are really friendly and helpful.
Thollon itself is quite small as a ski resort, however it proved excellent for us as my Husband was a beginner so never felt daunted by the size of the place. The lifts run well with hardly any queuing, and there is an adequate restaurant up on the slopes.
To sum up, we have already booked for 2007!"
Thollon is a perfect family skiing resort - really friendly with extremely helpful ski-instructors and lift attendants. Lots of gentle to intermediate slopes - perfect for starting children off on skis. Lots of English families, so the children don't feel too isolated in the French ski classes. Good lunches, hot chocolate etc. available in the ski lodge at the top cable car station. There's also a creche at the bottom of the mountain right next to the cable car where our children were really happy to spend the odd hour or two while we did some grown-up skiing. For days off we ventured to the Aquapark just over the Swiss border and tobogganed in Bernex. The hotel in the village also let us swim in their pool for free as long as we bought a hot chocolate afterwards!
This is a lovely comfortable family chalet with plenty of space for all the clobber that a ski holiday entails! The downstairs bedrooms are cosy and warm with a good size bathroom. The main living area is spacious and comfortable and it's great to be able to cook without having to shut yourself away from everyone else. The chalet is only a couple of minutes drive to the cable car so everything is very straightforward. I'd thoroughly recommend it for families - we fitted in very easily with our three young children
