The Northern England / Yorkshire/Yorkshire Dales region
The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline. A haven for walkers, the area also boasts great cycling, gliding, riding and fishing, whilst North York Moors Railway is the perfect way to enjoy the beautiful scenery in a more relaxed setting. Visit the market towns of Pickering or Thirsk; the latter famous for its links with the English country vet and author, James Herriot.
Nearby, some of Yorkshire’s best-loved villages including Thornton-le-Dale and Rosedale Abbey offer a taste of village life, as does Goathland, ‘Aidensfield’ in the TV series ‘Heartbeat’. Finally, stop off at Castle Howard and Duncombe Park, two of Britain’s most historic stately homes situated in breathtaking parklands and gardens. The cliffs, sandy beaches and smugglers’ caves of the Yorkshire coastline are a haven for beachcombers and coastal walkers. Discover the quaint fishing villages of Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes, with their brightly coloured fishing boats. Finally, there’s the historic city of York, with its interactive Viking Centre, Roman walls, medieval streets, vibrant shops and gothic York Minster cathedral.
The Thirsk / Bagby area
Only three miles from Thirsk, the picturesque village of Bagby is situated between the eastern Hambleton Hills and the western Yorkshire Dales. Whilst composed of only a few farm dwellings, period houses and a great traditional pub, this village boasts a wide range of local walks, cycle paths, fishing and bird watching. Other nearby activities include microlight flights at Bagby airport and Monk Park Farm visitor centre. The nearby town of Thirsk is also a hive of activity - with the famous racecourse holding dozens of events a year, cosy tea-shops and delicatessens, there is something for everyone amongst this town’s cobbled streets. Thirsk also inspired Alf Wight to create the town of Darrowby, the setting of the James Herriot novels and fans will be able to see many similarities. The historic towns of York and Ripon are also within driving distance, as are the coastal resorts of Scarborough and Whitby.

Cottage was clean and very comfortable. It contained everything you would have at home. Shame it did not have a garden area at he rear and that the local pub was not more family friendly Verified by FlipKey, a TripAdvisor company |

Guestbook for 2983 - Wren Cottage
The cottage was so lovely, a home-from-home.

,Excellent location and many places to visit within half an hours drive. Very friendly locals and an excellent village pub. The owners were very friendly and communicative. The property itself was immaculate, well appointed and maintained. A good selection of brochures for local events and attractions was provided in the cottage.

,This cottage was perfect for our week in Yorkshire. Coming from Australia we new nothing of the area and the information on the table in the cottage gave us more that enough scope to plan an enjoyable week traveling near and far and returning to a quiet comfy retreat each night.

,The cottage was excellent, a credit to the owners. Without doubt one of the best cottages we have stayed in anywhere in the country. The area is beautiful and there is so much to do and see.
