Southern Holland region
The Hague is a beautiful city behind the dunes and today still known as 'the largest village of Europe'. The Hague is the home of the Royal Family and the seat of the Dutch Government. Within 20 minutes you reach historic towns like Delft, Leiden, Rotterdam and Gouda.
The city is the world's capital of international justice: the Peace Palace, the international tribunals, Eurojust and Europol are in The Hague. It's also a very green city with 11 km coastline, extensive parks and large nature reserves in the dunes. You can enjoy many cultural events, concerts, art exhibits and nights out. Or you come for shopping on Sundays in a historic setting.
The Hague boasts many historical buildings, including the Knight's Hall dating from the 13th century, the Prison Gate and the Mauritshuis Museum from 1644, monumental mansions from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, magnificent Jugendstil and Art Nouveau buildings.
A must-see is the Binnenhof (Inner Court), a previous castle for the noble-men, the centre of politics during last 500 years. This is where the most important events in Dutch history took place and the buildings themselves are well worth seeing. There are plenty of palaces in and around the city, like Huis ten Bosch and Paleis Noordeinde, both used by the queen (closed for public), the Peace Palace, Clingendael, Escher palace and the Kurhaus in Scheveningen.
Museums and culture
Culture spotters have plenty of choice for visiting galleries and museums. The most famous ones are Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis, Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, Panorama Mesdag, GEM (museum of contemporary art) and Museon (popular scientific museum). For high culture, the Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) and the Residentie Orchestra should not be missed.
The fashionable beach resort of The Hague has the most popular sea shore of The Netherlands. In the hot summer months you can sunbathe on the beach or stroll down the boulevard. In the winter you can experience the raw elements of wind and sea, go shopping and then drink a cup of hot cocoa on the Pier.
There are busy and fancy beaches with over 70 trendy clubs (Scheveningen-Bath), sporty areas with a beach stadion and surf schools (Scheveningen-Harbour), but there are also quiet beaches with seagulls and plenty of space for kite playing (Duindorp), family resorts with campsite and cosy pancake restaurants (Kijkduin). And enjoy the beauty of the natural dunes on the nude beach in the north (Noorderstrand).
Scheveningen Harbour is always a whirlwind of activity with loudly squawking seagulls announcing the arrival of freshly-laden fishing boats and sailing yachts. You can buy fish or dine out in one of the restaurants in the harbour.
There are several bicycle tracks through the dunes and the nature reserve Meijendel. In the middle of the forest there is a pancake restaurant and a nature information centre. In Wassenaar you will find several palaces and parks.
