The Normandy / Manche region

Jutting far out into the sea-green waters of the Channel, you could say that the department of Manche, better known as the Cherbourg Peninsula, is off the beaten track. It is a green and pleasant Norman province that has much in common with the mild climes of the English South-West and is well away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities.
As you travel the length of its peaceful country roads or walk along one of its picturesque hiking trails, you will notice the startlingly varied landscape that has shaped the local life. The famous Norman bocage of hedges and thickets interspersed with undulating lush green fields is home to beautifully preserved castles, manor houses, abbeys and churches which provide fascinating places to visit, photograph and enjoy.
Manche is also a maritime province (it takes its name from the French word for the English Channel) and has an extensive seaboard; from the abrupt yet beautiful landscapes of the western tip of the peninsula to the impressive Mont-Saint-Michel Bay.
What else can you do in such a natural and wholesome environment other than taste the richness of its centuries-old gastronomic tradition and gently absorb the quintessential art de vivre of its inhabitants? Discover its bustling town markets and no-nonsense farm shops that purvey all sorts of local delicacies for you to delight in. While you are here, stock up with some of the time-honoured specialities such as creamy Camembert cheeses, bubbling ciders, heady and calvados apple brandies. For those who just want to relax, visit one of the stylish cafés, brasseries or top-quality restaurants
The Tessy-sur-vire area
As to be expected the area has many delightful restaurants from local bistros through to Michelin starred haute cuisine.
There are plenty of local walks along the river or further afield there are magnificent destinations within 40 mins drive including the Normandy coast and Le Mont St Michel.
For shopping, Tessy-Sur-Vire, our local town is just a few minutes away for wonderful artisan bakers, butchers and grocers. Larger supermarkets are available a short drive away in St Lo.
The river Vire is the major river of the Manche. There is a well maintained tow path so you can explore the river to your hearts content.
During August there are many local fetes, giving insight into ancient local crafts and skills

We stayed at Le Hamel du Mont for a month and were more than happy there. it is a lovely cosy cottage with loads of personality. It was spotlessly clean and very well equipped- particularly the kitchen which was a pleasure to cook in. The owners made us feel very welcome and provided many generous extras that are not usually found in a holiday house. The position is bucolic and perfect as a base for exploring the Normandy countryside. |

Thank you very much for letting our family use your cottage recently. Although the break was relatively short we all came back refreshed after a relaxing few days in Normandy. The cottage met all our expectations and was very comfortable and homely. Sitting in front of the log fire in the evening, sharing time with the family, was particularly special. The cottage in well placed in attractive countryside with easy access to the main attractions in Normandy. Both Mont St Michel and The Memorial in Caen didn't disappoint and were straight forward to get to. Thank you for a lovely break |
