Beautiful country home with off-street parking, a well kept garden and private pool. Just 30 minutes drive from Lisbon and 20 minutes from Sintra. We are close to many of Portugal's best tourist attractions, so an ideal base for touring and exploring nearby Sintra (world heritage), Ericeira and Cascais. Casais da Cabrela is located just 10km from the coast with several surfing beaches or more sheltered swimming beaches a short drive away. Many have sea front restaurants and bars.
The original part of the house had been an old olive press which still exists in part in the living room and has been incorporated into the interior of the living area. In the old days locals used to make olive oil by pressing a large wooden plate with a massive wooden screw - these features are now part of the house including the stone press basin that has been converted to a loft area lined with cushions and a large sunny window suited for reading, listening to music or just an afternoon nap.
From the terrace outside the living room you have uninterrupted views over the valleys. With a private swimming pool one terrace below also overlooking the view.
The kitchen is a real farm house style kitchen with all the charm you would expect from bygone eras but totally modern in terms of equipment with a separate pantry and work area.
The house is situated in a quiet rural area just minutes from the local village of Montelavar where you can find a local restaurants, supermarkets and general services. The house is half an hour from Cascais, Sintra and Lisbon.
The beautiful old town of Ericeira takes you back in time to the days when it was a tiny fishing village. Cobbled streets, white-washed houses and a plethora of restaurants and cafes offer excellent food, especially the sea-food for which Portugal is deservedly famous.
Sintra is a magnificent town of marvellous historic mansions, all set against the backdrop of lush hills. Classified by UNESCO as a world heritage, Sintra's many castles include the Palácio Nacional, the hilltop and storybook Palácio da Pena, Quinta de Regaleira (incorporating several architectural styles and with gorgeous surrounding gardens), the Castelo dos Mouros (Moorish Castle), and the Palácio de Monserrate.
When 13th-century Portuguese Queen Isabel passed through Obidos and marvelled at its beauty, her husband King Denis I simply gave it to her. For centuries after, the kings of Portugal followed suit, presenting the picturesque little town to their queens as a wedding gift. With its white buildings shining as brightly now as then, the walled city of Obidos is very popular with tourists, its hillside location offering amazing views of the Estremadura area. The medieval castle is a main attraction.
The house has a living room and a sunny conservatory so ample for up to 8 people. It also has the loft area (old mill).
Dining area is part of the open plan kitchen. Old wooden table to seat about 8 and there is also the outside terrace marble table which can also seat 8 and is wonderful for alfresco dining in the summer. Big outdoor barbeque.
Fully equipped kitchen with pantry which houses fridge/freezer, oven and microwave. Dishwasher and washing machine are available along with kettle and toaster.
2 double bedrooms and 2 twin bedroom all with fans and cupboard space.
Bathrooms: 2 bathrooms both with bath and shower.

"Wonderful country house with pool and stunning views"
I'd come to Portugal to celebrate New Year's Eve with a group of seven friends and, wow, what a great choice this charming farmhouse was. The place has heaps of character with a welcoming open fire, ancient olive press and lots of interesting art (you can tell owner is an artist).
The views out over the terrace and back garden are eye-poppingly beautiful with acres of green countryside and not a building in sight. The garden is lovely too. Despite being the depths of winter, the trees were groaning with fruit and the air was scented with flowers. We enjoyed the sense of peace and tranquility, while also having neighbours close at hand, who were sweet enough to give us fresh herbs from their gardens.
Cabrela is pretty quiet, but there's heaps to do close by. The house is about an hour - 79 KM - from Lisbon and there are lots of other fabulous local sights. We enjoyed hiking up to the palaces in Sintra, even hopping on the little tourist train (fun for kids) and made the most of walking on the beautiful, windswept, local beaches. I can only imagine how gorgeous it must be in summer, when you can swim and surf to your heart's content and make the most of the swimming pool at the house. We really enjoyed cooking over the wood-burning BBQ, which would be a lot of fun in the summer too.
If you want an amazing treat - as we did on New Year's day - I can thoroughly recommend Areias Do Seixo, about an hour away, for a fantastic meal and cocktails.

"Exceptional historical house, very comfortable with far reaching views"
We were holidaying together as a group all staying in this beautiful country house over New Year. As my first trip to Portugal I could not have wished for a better location and experience. The house is truly individual with many historic features and personal touches from the owners; the perfect place to relax and unwind. The views and surrounding countryside are stunning and its close proximity to Sintra and Lisbon allows for interesting day trips. Theresa who looks after the property could not have been more helpful and welcoming as were the other locals in the village. I would highly recommend this property and hope to return.

"A special stay"
We really loved staying in this property. We've been on many stay-cations and are always looking for places that have something unusual or different about them. We definitely found that here.
What we loved: The very relaxed and special feeling of the place, cooking in the double height kitchen and serving on the outdoor patio, (obviously created by people who loved entertaining), reading in the space above the olive press in the sun, (and looking through all the books left on the shelves), eating fresh fruit and vegetables from the lovely garden, watching the sheep being herded through the valley, dips in the pool, easy access to Sintra and Lisbon and the fabulous couple who look after the property who couldn't have been more helpful.
Safe to say we'll be going back again.

"Perfect country house near Sintra"
We visited Chico's place with friends to celebrate the new year. Teresa and Manuel who look after the property were excellent and even helped us with parking for our campervan before our stay. The house is decorated with real taste and wonderful rustic style with a mixture of antiques, abstract art and unusual objects which make it really special. The living room has an ancient olive press within it - and the whole house was really beautiful and well-cared for. As it was winter we used the fireplace in the living room and we found the house to be really cosy. We would love to come back in the summer so that we could use the swimming pool. The house is around 20 minutes drive from Sintra and around 40 minutes to Lisbon by car or train. You must have a car to enjoy staying here as it is quite remote. We also drove to the beach and to visit Ericeira during our stay. Overall I cannot recommend this house enough for a group of friends or a family. We had the most amazing new year's eve dinner gathered around the large wooden table, eating delicious meat from the barbecue and saw in the new year looking at the star-filled sky.

"Charming house with views and full of character off the beaten track"
I stayed here with friends and family over Christmas and it was wonderfully peaceful and full of charm. The location is great within easy reach of Lisbon, Sintra and coastal villages with rocky coastlines and wide, open beaches. The weather was glorious, blue skies and sunshine and surprisingly warm for this time of year. The house is full of character and has a very cosy feel whilst offering plenty of space. There are orange, lemon and clementine trees in the garden which taste completely different from those back at home. I wholeheartedly recommend this oasis of charm.
