The South East England region

Kent, known as The Garden of England, is a beautiful county, full of stunning gardens, quaint villages, beautiful coastline and all set in a picturesque landscape.

Charming beaches - many of which achieve Blue Flag status, stretch from Whitstable, renowned for its Oysters, to Dungeness, known for its RSPB Nature reserve.

The North Downs/ Pilgrims Way extends from the White Cliffs of Dover to Surrey and are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, along with the Kentish Weald, all beautiful to explore whether on foot, cycle or by car.

No visit to Kent would be complete without a visit to Canterbury, with its UNESCO World Heritage Cathedral & the heart of religious England for 1,400 years.

So whether you wish to visit stately homes, castles, gardens, seaside resorts, country pubs, golf courses or vineyards, the county of Kent, really does have something for everyone.

Tenterden

The cottage is along a quiet country lane in the village of High Halden, in the heart of the Kent countryside. The parish is recorded in the Domesday Book and parts of a Norman manor house can be seen at Tiffenden Farm. The ancient church has a very unusual, shingled oak spire and has recently been restored, but is worth a visit. The Chequers Inn, circa 1620 has strong links with smugglers from the famous 'Hawkhurst and Cranbrook' gangs, that were active in the 18th century and is typical of the English pubs in the area, that litter the countryside.

The Cinque Ports Town of Tenterden is three miles away and stands on the edge of the Weald overlooking the valley of the River Rother. It is a pretty town and has a mixture of independent boutiques, antique shops, quaint tea rooms and a good selection of typical English pubs. Close by are two award winning vineyards which can be visited, Biddenden Vineyard and Chapel Down Winery or you can step back in time and take a trip on Kent and Sussex Railway steam trains. Sissinghurst Castle and Smallhythe Place are all close by and are excellent National Trust properties to visit.

The Medieval town of Rye is just thirty minutes away and has lots for visitors to explore for the day, whether you are looking for Boutique shops or quaint tea rooms. The Heritage Centre, just a gentle stroll down to the Quay is a good place to start, here you can watch the 'Sound and Light' show exploring the town's past with the Town model. You can visit the famous Rye Church and watch the 'Quarter boys' strike the quarter hour and enjoy the beautiful stained glass windows or just take in the views from the 'Gun Gardens', over the marsh and towards the sea.

Just ten minutes drive from Rye is the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, where you can walk along the sea wall and out on to the marshes to enjoy floral and fauna. You can choose to walk out to Camber Castle, originally located on a shingle spit and where once it protected the towns of Rye and Winchelsea, before the sea receded. Although no longer open to visitors it is still a striking landmark worth a visit. The award winning, blue flag beach of Camber Sands is just a short drive away and has miles of sandy beach and dunes to explore. Or visit the rock pools at low tide of the pebbly beach at Pett Level, just a 10 minute drive from Rye.

The town Ashford is around a twenty minutes drive away and here you can get main line trains to London, if you wish to explore the capital for a day. If you would like to take a day trip to the continent , the Eurostar can be picked up from Ashford International station and trains to Paris, Lille and Brugge are available. Alternatively the ferries run from Dover just 45 minutes away or the Channel Tunnel from Folkestone is a 45 minute drive.
