The West Wales / Pembrokeshire / Pembrokeshire region
Pembrokeshire is a magical part of the United Kingdom with an outstanding coastline - recently judged joint second in the world by National Geographic Traveler magazine alongside the Tutukaka Coast in New Zealand. Not to be outdone, Lonely Planet has named Coastal Wales the "best region on Earth" to visit in 2012. The county enjoys a mild climate and wonderful light, which will be appreciated by artists and photographers alike.
The county has some of the best beaches in the UK, including the beaches in Tenby, Manorbier, Barafundle and Freshwater West, the latter having recently featured in Ridley Scott's "Robin Hood" and both "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" films. More recently, scenes from "Snow White and the Huntsman" starring Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth have been filmed at Marloes Sands.
Opportunities to walk along the coastline abound with Britain's only dedicated coastal National Park extending from Amroth to Poppit Sands, a distance of 299 km.
In addition to the local castles, we recommend a visit to the Tudor Merchant's House in Tenby, the remains of Lamphey Bishops Palace, Bosherston Lily Ponds and St
The Tenby area
Encompassed by medieval walls, this town features a maze of cobbled streets, hosting an array of shops, tea rooms and restaurants. Almost 3 miles of stunning, blue flag awarded beach provides a variety of watersports. Explore the magnificent Tudor Merchant's House, visit the nearby resort of Saundersfoot or enjoy the animals at nearby Folly Farm. Oakwood Theme Park provides a brilliant, fun-filled day out, whilst the fascinating Dinosaur Experience is a must. Situated just one and a quarter miles to the west of Tenby, the pretty hillside village of Penally overlooks Tenby Golf Course and the long sandy South Beach. Just a 15 minute leisurely walk from Tenby town through the golf course and along the coastal path. Access can be gained by marked footpaths through the golf course onto the beach and for those wishing to join the 186 mile coastal path access is at Giltar Point at the end of the beach. The village boasts the 13th Century church of St Nicholas & St Teilo, originally called St Nicholas' but changed to St Nicholas and St Teilo at the end of the 19th Century when it was found that Penally was birthplace of St Teilo, a Christian leader in the 6th century. The church is also home to the Penally Celtic Cross originally found in the graveyard but restored and moved into the church. There is a well stocked shop and 2 public houses, The Cross and The Paddock Inn which both serve good food also The Overlander Restaurant. On the periphery of the village Ritec Valley Quad Bikes offer some family fun with Trail riding and Arrive and Drive and for those seeking some nightlife there is DJ's nightclub. The village is also home to Hoyles Mouth Cave where paleolithic people once lived and artifacts from those times can be found at Tenby Museum.
