The West Country / Devon region
There are two sides of Teignmouth, the holiday side with the beaches, promenade and pier, and the riverside with its working port. Teignmouth is one of Devon's oldest seaside resorts and retains much of the quaint charm and homely atmosphere which has drawn generations of visitors looking for the traditional activities found beside the sea. There is a long sandy beach and bathing, other than in the estuary, is among the safest in the West Country. There are plenty of other activities to be found that will suit all ages, including novelty golf, model boats, rides, and of course, the famous pier.
Originally built for Victorian tourists, who enjoyed promenading its 700-foot length, Teignmouth Grand Pier has been welcoming visitors for 130 years. Now slightly shorter after the landing jetty was removed, the pier remains an enduring symbol of the traditional seaside resort. Stretching out into the clear blue waters of the bay it provides a unique style of fun and entertainment to around 290,000 visitors every year.
Teignmouth is famous for its floral attractions, which have won numerous accolades. Gardeners and flower lovers are always thrilled by the beautiful displays along the promenade and in the Den - a six-acre public garden with plenty of places for relaxation and quiet contemplation.
Just a short passenger ferry ride across the river Teign is village of Shaldon. Here a short climb to the Ness, a tree topped cliff overlooking the mouth of the river will be rewarded by a magnificent view. An attractive village, Shaldon has retained much of its old world charm and there is a good range of local shops.
Teignmouth area
There is an enormous variety of things to see and do in the area including coast and country walks, National Trust properties, gardens, blue flag beaches, thatched villages and picturesque towns, castles, craft and antique centres, children’s theme parks and farms, boat trips, fishing.
Within 2 miles of Higher Holcombe Farm Holiday Cottages you can play golf and golfers are treated to a course with spectacular views, at 800 feet above sea level it offers a challenging round of golf with a backdrop envied by many other clubs. Even if you don't play it's well worth going up there for the scenery.
There is riding and coarse fishing 5 miles away, and at Dawlish Warren, 5½ miles, there is a 500-acre natural bird sanctuary, where you can see thousands of birds on land and overhead; the farm itself is also home to many different species, including the nationally rare cirl bunting.
Within a 10 mile radius there are two race courses – Newton Abbot Race Course and Exeter. The Roman City of Exeter, approximately 15 miles. Whilst bustling Torbay (9 miles), which encompasses Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, has theatres, a yachting marina and a selection of fine gardens to visit; in addition to Kent's Cavern, where the remains of some of Britain's very earliest inhabitants (dating back approximately 25,000 years) were found. Here, you'll find castles, abbeys, wildlife parks, steam trains and model railways all within easy reach, with many open throughout the year. Newton Abbot's attractions include Bradley Manor, a 15th-century manor house set in 70-acres of woodlands and meadows, the Gorse Blossom Miniature Railway and Woodland Park, and a Hedgehog Hospital at Prickley Ball Farm.
Across the River Exe, is Exmouth. Totnes and Dartmouth, both of which make for a fun day out.
