The Lanzarote region
Lanzarote is formed by more then 100 volcanos that form a fascinating landscape which is unique in the world. Lanzarote is placed 750kms south of Gibraltar and it is the most easterly of the Canaries. It enjoys more sunshine and lower rainfall than any of the other islands and has one of the most pleasant climates in the northern hemisphere. The climate is due in part to the influence of the gulf-stream and favourable trade winds.
Teguise / Oasis de Nazaret area
The National Park 'Timanfaya" is where the heart of the volcanic mass spilled over leaving a lunar landscape which has played host to many television films. There are 51sq km of volcanoes, craters and lava fields offer one of the most spectacular sights that nature has created. There are lots of opportunities to explore the mountains, by tour or even by camel and there is also a restaurant where you can enjoy food cooked by the natural heat of the volcano.
Jameos is the name given to caves of volcanic origin but these caves are something different, hosting a restaurant, dance floor and swimming pool. The bar/restaurant leads to the 'jameo grande' by a pathway of 100 metres in length and 13 metres wide that crosses the small lake that is home to the 'jameito', tiny blind albino crabs that are unique to Lanzarote.
A spectacular and complex system of caves about 7km long was formed by underground lava flows. Their geological form is amazing and the lighting inside brings out the colours and magic of the cave interior. A wonderful experience for all, tours run on an hourly basis.
The cactus garden was created by local artist, the late Caesar Manrique, and features an impressive collection of cacti and sculptures.
Teguise, the ancient capital of the island, with its narrow streets and well-preserved buildings, full of historic interest, is truly beautiful. Teguise is also where the Sunday market is held and people come from all over the Island to barter for the beautiful tablecloths, leather goods and wooden items.
Lanzarote produces nearly 2 million litres of wine every year. La Geria is famous for its potent wines and here you can see how grapes are cultivated for the production of the delicate Lanzarote wines.
There is only one golf course on the island and it is placed at the foot of an old volcano with wonderful views across the ocean. Golf Costa Teguise was designed by John Harris in 1978 and is surrounded by leafy palm trees, extravagant cactus and volcanic lava, a unique setting for 18 holes.
The late Ceasar Manrique was responsible for much of the Islands sculpture. He designed the tourist centre and created a natural auditorium and artistic gardens. The Cactus Garden is one of César Manrique's last works.
The diving on Lanzarote is fascinating because of it´s volcanic underwater landscape and abundant fishlife. The visibilty is about 20 metres and the water temprature lies between 17 and 22 ºC. With many and varied Atlantic vistors throughout the year together with a host of wrecks and caves to explore, it is one of the most diverse islands in the group. La Santa Diving provides guided dives, PADI courses from Open Water to Dive Master, Introductory sea dives and speciality courses can be organised to fit in with your holiday arrangements.
Lanzarote's fortunate location on the fringes of the North Atlantic storm track have created one of the most surf-rich islands in the world. For those who love surfing and body boarding the world-famous beaches of Famara and La Santa both present fabulous opportunities.
Cycling in Lanzarote is a memorable experience. The Seinery is breath taking and in the main the roads are very good as is the weather most of the time. Many top professional cycling teams use the island to train on during the summer and winter and chances are you will see one whilest out on the road. Many groups of riders leave daily from nearby Club La Santa and tagging along is permitted if you fancy a group ride. The Lanzarote Ironman Triathlon is held here every year and our villas are ideally located for entrants wanting to train on the course before hand or those looking for accommodation during the event itself. There is also some great off road riding to be had if Mountain Biking is your bag.
