An adorable Grade 'B' listed cottage, built of stone with over-hung eaves and slate roof, the gate lodge is situated at the entrance gates to the Killean Estate, within its own garden area with easy access from the road and ample parking. There are lots of original features like stained glass windows, wood panelling and a fireplace with log fire, providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere. A contemporary kitchen and bathroom have been installed recently to provide fantastic up-to-date facilities.

The surrounding gardens are mainly laid to lawn with woodland borders and with a lovely waterfall flowing down through the trees. There are truly spectacular views from the house out across the grassy coastal plain towards the sea and to the islands beyond and the most amazing sunsets can be experienced. You can see the islands of Gigha, Jura and Islay from the Gate Lodge and right out towards the Atlantic Ocean. The sandy beach is just a short walk down our farmtrack, once you've crossed the road.

Killean Estate is a beautiful 5000 acre working farm, incorporating 18 rental properties, a mile of beaches, hills, lochs, woodland, manicured gardens and much more besides. The Argyll and Bute region

Argyll is both accessible and remote. Stretching from the outer limits of Glasgow to Ardnamurchan, the most westerly point in the UK, it is a region of stunning natural beauty, with an island-dotted coastline and picturesque towns. This whole area is the birthplace of Celtic Scotland and there are monuments and castles aplenty to explore during your stay, where you can learn all about the Stone Age Picts, early Irish Dalriata as well as Viking invasions, the Somerled uprising and much more besides. Renowned for its beauty, as well as its native wildlife, it's the holiday destination of choice for those who want to enjoy the great outdoors.

During your drive to Killean Estate, you will pass along the lochside of Loch Lomond, pass over the mountain pass of the Rest and be Thankful, and then meander around the loch edges of Loch Long , Loch Gilp and Loch Fyne. The towns of Inverary, with its famous castle and jail are well worthy of a quick stop-off, as is the fantastic oyster restaurant at Loch Fyne before you head into the Kintyre Peninsula.

Alternatively, if you are travelling via the Isle of Arran, this too is well worthy of further inspection as it is a land of contrasts, from lush green pasture to rocky interior mountains. Although, you can easily do a day-trip here too mid-way through your stay with us. In fact, there are three other islands close by if you fancy a bit of island hopping….

Isle of Gigha - Sometimes known as 'God's Island', Gigha is reached from Killean's nearest village - the ferry port of Tayinloan, where you can take a short ferry journey to the Island. Well worthy of a day trip, Gigha boasts beautiful bays, sandy beaches, clear green seas, amazing views, lochs and hillsides and an abundance of wildlife and birdlife. There are various historic sites to visit and the glorious, well-known Achamore Gardens.

Isles of Islay and Jura – Totally stunning and famous for the whisky distilleries and red deer, these islands are suitable for an overnight stay as a day trip is not really long enough.

Tayinloan

The Kintyre Peninsula is about forty miles long and contains fantastic family days out, plenty of things to do and see and Scottish attractions making Kintyre an attractive family holiday destination. On your journey to and around Kintyre you will find the stunning hills & lochs, sandy beaches and stunning sunsets, history and archaeology, and of course seafood which have made this part of Scotland famous. Additionally there are small extras that make Kintyre almost unique; the palm trees in Campbeltown shows the effect of the Gulf Stream, low rainfall (less than 40% of the rest of the west of Scotland), rare golden eagle nesting sites (the most expensive eagles in the world), the absence of traffic jams (our one traffic warden is the last example of an endangered species), two world class golf courses on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean featuring the 'best first hole in the world', and a great established Scottish walk that has to be attempted. Kintyre's a land which is the very cradle of Celtic Scotland, and much more bedsides.

There's plenty to see and do in the area. A boat trip to Gigha is highly recommended where we suggest you hire the bicycles from the beach-shack, tour the Achamore Gardens and take lunch at the boathouse overlooking the bay. A 25-minute drive north from Killean Estate will take you to Tarbert harbour, home of some of Scotlands finest restaurants, and if you continue another 15-minutes onto Skipness, you'll discover a castle, fabulous bay and our previous guest's top-rated destination for seafood. A short trip south from Killean will uncover horse-riding and a historic house at Glenbarr, a couple of superb surfing beaches at Westport and Machrihanish, the Mull of Kintyre and the harbour town of Campbeltown which has plenty to do - whiskey tours, museums, leisure swimming pool, pubs and the opportunity of boat trips such as whale watching. If golf is your bag, there's plenty of choice - there are five course nearby including Owd Tom's famous Machrihanish Links! But why not take a quick tour around the Kintyre Trail and find out for yourself?
